I got an email this morning from my domain registrar, stating that the ".CO" domain name extension is now available. This new extension is supposed to be "global", and that it's gonna be just as popular as ".com"...
To the webasters here, would you register your-domain.co ? Currently, it's advertised for $29/year, which I think is a rip off! Apple, Microsoft, Google, and a few others have already reserved theirs.

.CO Registry has done major job of promoting/hyping the extension since January. It still is and will remain the TLD extension for Columbia.
Corporations which have reserved the names are all either Columbian or Global trademark owners. It's only prudent for them to get the names.
For the rest of us, If you already have the .net and .com - and perhaps the .org TLD extensions, you might want to consider getting the .co but it's still unclear if the .CO Registry can sustain the hype.

We have already registered http://www.webwiz.co" rel="nofollow - www.webwiz.co a few months back during the trademark application stage.
.CO is a great alternative to .COM and you can register .CO domains through ourselves for £18.95 per year. This may sound a little high, but the current whole sale price on these new registrations is quite high at present, but should come down in time.
Quite a few .CO domains have been registered already. There are meant to be over 200,000 .CO domains registered already and it's only been 1 day since it's general availability. Allot of the domains I have looked for are gone already.
We also have a promotion on a number of other registrations at present including .COM registrations for just £5.95, and up to 80% off CentralNic domain registrations.
We have some of the cheapest prices in the UK for domain registrations, renewals and transfers, and full list of our prices for domains can be found at the link below:-
http://www.webwiz.net/domains/domain_registration_prices.asp" rel="nofollow - http://www.webwiz.net/domains/domain_registration_prices.asp
We also include additional features such as an online Control Panel and a Free Private Registration Service, which normally costs extra through other providers.
For more information on our Free Private Registration Service have a look at the link below:-

That's the thing... my website isn't that popular, but i'd hate to see someone else owning my domain with the .co extension. I also hate to waste $29 if it the .CO extension won't be as popular as .com.
The other thing is that nowadays, most people use the search field within their favorite search engine or whatever is on their homepage to get to a specific site. I do it all the time because it's quicker to type one word instead of having to type all 3 or 4 parts of a domain name in the address bar.

But what's wrong with .COM? Why would people switch to .CO, especially considering its high price? Is it because it's 1 less character to type, or what?

The simple answer is that .COM domains are running out as there are so many now registered. If the .COM domain you want is registered then .CO is a good alternative.
The .co extension has been well marketed since January building up quite a bit of hype and even registrars that stick the main TLD's (.COM, .ORG, .NET, .INFO) are offering .CO domains.
In just two days of general availability there are over 250,000 .CO domains registered, so looks like all the hype and promotion around it is working, but only time will tell if it will be a popular alternative to .COM

Right, that's a good point, but i think this would apply only to small/non-popular sites because it might lead to legal issues to snatch someone's domain name with a different extension... Say I go and register apple.co, wouldn't Apple complain to law enforcement and come after me? I'm not sure how that works or if I would get away with it.

I personally cannot see how .co can be allowed per say Imagine if someone types in www.mysite.co
meaning to type in www.mysite.com
and they have auto web address filled in, or remember previous entries, then surely there might be a problem Out of interest though Google has registered the following domain:
www.google.co
But if you type it into the address bar nothing happens.
I think it is a money making scheme to be honest

I think there'll be more people adding the "m" to a .co domain just out of habit than people forgetting to type the "m" on a .com domain.

Yeh well whichever, I still think it's a money making scheme and if they add a m then if the .co user has not registered the dot com it works in someone else's favour.
I liked the old system I'm sure they could have come up with something better

The .CO domain has been around for about 20 years. It is for Columbia, just like we have UK for UK domains.
What has changed is that Columbia has decided to allow anyone, not just Colombians to register .CO domains and so it is being marketed as an alternative to the .COM.
The reason that it has market appeal is that many countries use .CO as second lever domains, such as .CO.UK. The other reason is that .COM domain names are starting to run very fin on the ground as everything has been registered.
If you are waiting for something better to come along then you may have your wish as soon ICANN are opening up domain extensions, so for around $200,000.00 you can have your own domain extension, such as .MrTWS and you can then sale www.myWebsite.MrTWS

The new .CO domains do seem to be popular.
In the two weeks since it's lunch we now have more .CO domains registered on our systems than we have for .BIZ, .MOBI, .EU, .TV, and .NAME
Most people who are registering them are registering them as second name to .CO.UK domains.
