I am getting two kinds of spam posts
>users who join my forum post one post full of links
>user post one liners one single post for signature backlinks

signature permissions in ver  10 would solve that, so not a problem in next version

but how do we handle links within posts (i have ALSO activated flood control. )
they posts one post at a time..

ANS>even links within posts should not be allowed to new members or certain group of members
que> If we could trace all posts with url or anchor tag in one command would reduce our cleaning time it takes lot of time manually visiting each post.

currently I have added following in bad word control filter
http, href, www, .com, .co, .info, org

any other way to avoid these spammers...they use different email address and spam from different ip address every time..

thanks

The following documentation on spam prevention should help:-

Version 10 also has a new system developed for it where signatures, links, and images can be disabled for groups. This will allow you to disable these options for the new signup group, thus giving more control over preventing spam.

Here is a list of IP ranges, (Mainly Chinese / India based), that have been registering on my forum to sneak in and post links whether in their posts or signatures.

You should suspend these, in the following format, it has decreased the amount of spam on my forum dramatically.

  • 111.172.*
  • 112.111.*
  • 117.26.*
  • 59.92.*
  • 111.*
  • 123.52.*
  • 123.53.*
  • 122.164.*
  • 118.70.*

Prior to banning these IP ranges, I did a good research to ensure that these ranges are unique to the ISP's in those regions of the world, not anyone else.

Here is how mine looks like, as of now:

The IP location database at MaxMind is very useful for locating where an IP address or range is from:-

The problem with those IP blocks is that the automated submissions/bots are using open proxies on servers from around the world. So you end up having to ban IPs in every multiple locations and not particular to a country...

The CAPTCHA security images used within Web Wiz Forums prevents any automated bots from posting spam.

What spammers do due to the increasing use of CAPTCHA will have sweat shops of workers in developing countries being paid peanuts to go around posting spam to forums.

As these are real people and not bots preventing them from posting is difficult without making it difficult for genuine members to post, as these people writing the spam are not stupid and will use things like proxy servers to hide their real location.

On this forum we use the 'Post Approval' system for new members so the first 10 posts need to be approved. This has greatly reduce spam where before a spammer would post in every forum, now they post in a single forum, realise that there post needs to be approved and so do not post in any of the other forums as it would be a waste of time as the posts would not be approved.

beatcaptchas has been successful in breaking many captchas
bots like xrummer are also being used to spam known to break captchas easily
successfully used for forum spamming. profile and posts.
macros like imacro can also be used to spam ( home made bots) and with beatcaptchas they work fast. Imacro fails with rich text box.

some ubots made bots are also able to do spamming ( fails with captchas)
imacro create accounts using beat captcha and ubot works after that.

above ip list confirms that some of the spammers are from that list ips.
But i also have many genuine posts from that ip range

i dont mind ppl taking advantage of signature
but atleast they should post something of value..and regularly participate

so minimum  number of post for signature and posting a link is what I will wait for.

to make my forum more user friendly i dont want to impose so many restrictions but disallow what spammers need link.
50 posts for a link is what spammers wont do
or a captcha for first x number of posts might work in some cases.

Not faced this. but threat for PM spamming is always there.
to avoid PM spam(xrummer, imacro, ubot)... another tool spammers can use... one minute gap between each sent PM and limitation on number of pms sent within 24 hours...

I have not used any of the above tool so not sure how successful they are.. but their online info seems they are really powerful...

I am also getting similar spams on my wordpress blogs.. even after all the (plugins)measures....so i have to depend upon comments approval. that is the last resort...

thanks everyone.. i have disabled posts editing also. so that later on they dont add link in the post.

Is there a way we can find links within posts? any sql query? so that we can find them in one go without visitng each thread? and remove links or content...?
