I'm posting this topic in General Discussion because this is more about IE9 than the issues it has with WWF...

First of all, let me say that Microsoft are going backward with IE's GUI in their version 9 (BETA) of the browser.

IE9 BETA & WebWiz Forums: I understand that the browser is currently in BETA, but every other beta didn't have this issue... the issue is that the WWF RTE does not work with IE9. Both, quick and full reply editors aren't working. I hope this does not stay the same way when MS releases the full IE9, unless webwiz are able to do something about it.

Second issue and i would like some feedback on this from the webmasters here, from a troubleshooting standpoint, Microsoft is making technical support very difficult for ISP's with the new IE9 interface... you no longer see "tools" instead it is represented by an icon....
The address bar is so tiny you can barely see the full website address if a sub-domain is involved, etc... there is no independent search bar, the address bar is for both, searching and going to direct URL's.

Bruce has a good amount of code dedicated to dealing with the quirks of various browser api's. I'd imagine he'll address the 1i9 api as well.

Personally, I don't have an issue with MS's approach of using a minimalistic browser. They're trying to put less emphasis on the browser and more on the site content/web application. SFAIK, they will still have api support for tool bars and tool bar modifications to allow things like resizing.

I don't know what the issue is for ISP's that arises from replacing a Tools menu item with a Tools icon.

You get a person calling regarding a connectivity/browsing issue.. it would be easier to ask them to find "Tools" instead of looking at a tiny icon to get to Internet Options... it's not a big deal but it just makes it harder to walk people through troubleshooting, etc.

True, icons aren't always the most intuitive way of doing things but most ISPs follow a canned flow chart script for trouble shooting. It might add a few seconds to the contact but it's not an insurmountable problem.

I'd think more ISPs would be concerned with the direction MS is taking with branding the browser. Back in the day, I recall going through two or three months of negotiations with MS regarding where and how our telco ISP's logo would appear on the browser. It was important to us that it be readily visible. With IE9 that won't be the case. The IE logo itself is small and prefixed to the page title rather than large and within the body of the browser. There's little room for a brand to stand out.

In regards to the question on the RTE not working in IE 9 beta, it was exactly the same with IE 8 beta but worked fine in the final release.

I suspect that to trim down the browser for speed they have missed out things like the RTE API in IE beta so that it runs quicker thus better for publicity when it comes to saying that the browser is faster and leaner.

For the moment it's a case of waiting to see if like before the issue with RTE is addressed in the final release.

I wish Windows would somehow force people to stop using IE 6 and try to get their stuff together with a browser like Firefox does.  I am tired on testing sites in 6.7.8 and now 9.  Anyone else agree?

Then don't, more people use Firefox and Chrome now then use IE.

Also the number of people using mobile browsers has started to really go up in the last 6 months and with tablets about to really hit this year developing websites for mobile browsers will start becoming more important.

Yes. but because I develop commercial sites for clients I need to try to keep as many people happy as possible and usability throughout browsers is necessary.

Take the stats with a grain of salt. W3schools is mostly visited by tecnical folks.
Stats from my own non-technical sites aren't that far off from theirs though

Yeah.  The data is skewed because of that.  thecounter.com used to give free usage stats that were great but now they charge and the ones they show for free are very out of date.
