Upgrade documentation can be found on the page below:-

Just follow the one for the type of database you are using. The step by step instructions should mean that it is fairly simple.

PRECAUTIONS:

Backup your existing SQL Server database

Using an FTP Program remove from your web space all the old files and images for the existing forum you want to upgrade, just keeping the uploads folder that contains content that your members have uploaded.

Also, just for safety, make a backup of your existing forum files too on your own computer

Apart from that it should be fairly straight-forward as Bruce says

A problem can happen if you have added smilies, or say a mod from a forum member here, and those go into the "includes" and "smileys" folders.
So if you delete.......... well.................. so I guess I've always dropped the new folders and files on top of the existing, letting anything with the same name get over-written. THEN the chore of putting any mods such as COLOR changes, smileys, etc. back..........
