Hello!

A friend has asked me to upgrade a Web Wiz Forum from a very old version (7.01) to the latest. I don't know about this software, but after reading the instructions I thought it was ok since it had a wizard that would upgrade the databases from version 7.x to 9.x

So everything went ok during the upgrade and the forum is online, but I cannot log in anymore with the admin user that he gave me. I have tried both from the normal forum and going to /admin.asp, but it always tell me wrong password. I have tried the defaul ones (Administrator - letmein), but nothing.

For what I see, it seems that others can't log in either (all active users are guests and no new posts after the upgrade).

I have tried to create a new user to see if new ones can log in, but I never receive the activation email, so can't try that (the email not working must be a different problem, though).

So anyone has any clue about what can be the problem? Maybe the way of encrypting passwords has changed? Any other advise on how to debug the problem?

Thanks!

It could be that in the original 7.01 forum sho ever set up the forum disabled the password encryption. Have a look in the tblAuthor table in the database, if the Password column is plain text passwords then it is disabled.

Another thing it may be is the page encoding. This is the encoding used by the browser when submitting a form or displaying content. Back with 7.01 this was iso-8859-1 but is now utf-8 for improve language support.

Try editing in notepad the file includes/setup_options_inc.asp and changing the page encoding from utf-8 to iso-8859-1 and see if that allows you to login.

Hi!

Thanks for your reply. The second option was the first I tried because the forum is in Spanish and it was immediately obvious that the character encoding was wrong. But it didn't fix the password thing.

Tomorrow I'll check the tblAuthor table to see if it's plain text (but why would they have done that?).

Thanks for the hints!

Bingo! It was that the passwords in the old forum were not encrypted. I edited includes/setup_options_inc.aps and set blnEncryptedPasswords to False. That fixed the problem.

Thank you very much for the help!
