Hi,

I've just uploaded the free forum in HTDOCS and its not showing the forum

the link is www.physicsforum.phpzilla.net

1) Its not listing any files there, are you sure they have been uploaded?

2) Judging by the URL, I would say it is safe to assume that it is a Linux server. WWF only runs on Windows servers and requires ASP to be installed.

If you can only use that free hosting then you would be best off with phpBB forum on that website.

Hi,

Thanks for pointing that out about the php, it completely slipped my mind.

While i'm here, can webiz accommodate adsense and can someone confirm if paypal can somehow be intergrated so i could use subcription. Would i have to pay for this or is this something that you kind forum members could guide me on?

Any how scotty, thanks for the reply.

You can include your own adverts, including google adsense. How ever you would need to purchase a version that supports this. (the free version has limitations)

PayPal is not currently integrated so, again, you would need to purchase a version which supports modifying the source code.

You can see more about the different versions here:
http://www.webwiz.net/web-wiz-forums/forum-compare-editions.htm

It depends how you wish to integrate PayPal into WWF. If it is a simple buy now button where you would manually move the user from one group to another, then this would be a trivial feature to add.

If how ever you wanted it to be automated, or even include features to warrant the paid accounts then you would need to add this functionality your self, as I am unaware of any existing mods that would provide this.

Hi scotty,

Thanks for your post, what version would i need?

Posted By: WebWiz-Bruce

It all depends on what you are looking for. Any paid edition will allow you to do the things that scotty32 has mentioned.

If you do not have a Windows host or would feel more comfortable having the forum setup for you then the managed hosted version maybe best as the month hosting charge include the Premium Brand-Free version installed for you on our own servers and you also get upgrades installed for you for free.

Hi Bruce,

I've just purchased a forum, i suppose it will be tues or weds till you load it? also will i pick up the bill for the free domain name  registration? i'm not quite sure how to interpret that? is it free for the first 12 months or free to register it, then i pick the bill up for it.? Confused

Scotty,

left you a question on your forum.

Hi Paul

Normally most things purchased via Web Wiz are instantaneous. I don't personally have the forum hosting, but I assume if you have just purchased the package, it will have sent you emails which should include the information you require.

Bruce,

Thanks for uploading my forum quickly as i know it's holiday season Thumbs Up

Question:

How can i get my forum name at the top?

If you are referring to the banner image on the top of the forum you can either upload a new image using FTP then link to it from the admin area of your forum, or you could fill in a support ticket from your Client Area account, attaching the image you want to use, and we can change it over for you.

Bruce,

Is there a limit on the image like height? or length? if so i'll get it converted, also can you add text next to the image?

Just want to know what i'm up against to sort the image etc.

Cheers Paul.

Paul

The image in the header can be any dimensions you want as such. Example here: http://www.mrtws.com/forum/

The actual forum image 728px by 90px I created, and then I edited some bits and bobs so it seemed like the whole banner was one continuous image

If you are sticking with the forum as it is (without modding it) then again, the image dimensions are unimportant as such, obviously though you would not want to make it too large. What you are really referring to is what is probably called a banner
Creating a banner (or a logo image) with text, again is as easy as using some Photo editing software, make the banner and add in your text, and then create the image.

I hope that helps

Mr TWS LOL

Been messing around with this forum all weekend, i'm getting to grips with it, it's a very clever set up when you get the hang of it, more can be done than you first think (well in my case) i've sorted a few issues myself with trial an error.

Next issue is to get the forum running up to a nice member level, then offer a gold & platinum life membership for a one off payment (optional with more forum privilege's). I've put some thought into this and i could do it with a donation button only, if i manually put the member into the relevant group after they make the subcription/donation. Or i could add a buy it now button.

What are your thoughts on this?

Hi Paul
Do you mean like this in a post?

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=5032985" rel="nofollow">

Obviously that could be a Buy Now Button - but that is one option. So for example create a forum topic, and then create your post, with something like -
"When your payment has been completed, we will contact you to let you know, and your forum permissions will be altered to reflect your new status"

Or something along that line...

I didn't think of that one, i'll give it a try.

Thanks for that mr TWS Big smile

You can not put HTML into posts, as it will be removed to protect against hackers.

I assume what TWS meant was to add a message explaining the payment process.

The button would need to go in the header or footer. You could also create your own page outside of the forum to host the button.

Hi Scotty

The button is an actual link in the post - try it and you will see it works, but your way would work just as well. Either option is available, it just depends on how you would want to create the option for the customer or your forum member Paul

However, just to clarify HTML coding would be stripped - you would need to know the coding to put in so the post accepts the button

Hi mrTWS,

Do i have enough room for a 728 x 90 leaderboard advert next to my forum image at top left of forum, so the leader board goes next to it upper right or should i use banner 468 x 60?

http://www.physicsanswers.co.uk - my forum

Edit:

Bruce, thanks for the work today regarding the support ticket Big smile

Posted By: 123Simples

Hi Paul

What I would suggest is is 468x60 as your current image there is 346px × 95px
If you add 346 to 468 you get a overall width of 814
346 plus 728 is obviously 1074, and assuming that you want to make the site as user friendly as possible, we have to assume that users may have their screen resolutions set at 1024x768 (in the case of netbooks)

Ideally what I would do is setup the header file http://www.physicsanswers.co.uk/includes/header.asp

So that the header file controlled the images. Without swamping you with too much techno jargon, currently your file includes/header.asp will look like this:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Script-Type" content="text/javascript" />
<script language="javascript" src="includes/default_javascript_v9.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
</head>
<body>
<table class="basicTable" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="3" align="center">
 <tr>
  <td><%

'If there is a forum image then dsiplay it
If NOT strTitleImage = "" Then Response.Write("<a href=""" & strWebsiteURL & """><img src=""" & strTitleImage & """ border=""0"" alt=""" & strWebsiteName & " " & strTxtHomepage & """ title=""" & strWebsiteName & " " & strTxtHomepage & """ /></a>")

%></td>
 </tr>
</table>

Now say if for example you wanted to have a banner centralised, with a repeating background image tiling across, you would use something like this - I've highlighted in red the changes

<meta http-equiv="Content-Script-Type" content="text/javascript" />
<script language="javascript" src="includes/default_javascript_v9.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
</head>
<body>
<table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
  <tr>
    <td align="center" background="http://mrtws.com/forum/images/006_TitleBackground.jpg"><a href="http://www.mrtws.com"><img src="http://mrtws.com/forum/images/006_MainTitle.jpg" alt="MrTWS Universal Forum. Part of MrTWS.com. Chat, talk, share, forum feedback and discussion topics" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="728" height="90" title="MrTWS Universal Forum. Part of MrTWS.com. Chat, talk, share, forum feedback and discussion topics"></a>
</td>
  </tr>
</table>

<table class="basicTable" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="3" align="center">
 <tr>

%></td>
 </tr>
</table>

That is just off the top of my head but it's more or less right! LOL

Obviously Paul that is a very quick example (as my header file actually is different with extra bits), but I think it will give you an idea
You can also do what they call float left, float right, so in theory you can have two images, same line, one to the left and one to the right, but at twenty to eight in the evening after a long day I probably am not making that much sense or doing myself justice!

Question:

Do you need a privacy policy on a forum?

Posted By: 123Simples

Hi Paul T

It would depend - normally when people register you have the registration rules which should ideally specify your terms, conditions and perhaps any relevant privacy notes. Why?

Hi mrTWS,

I have adsense on my forum and i'm searching their help forum, i can't find any where adsense state you must have a privacy policy, however i see a few posts where users answering people that got their account disabled say "you didn't even show a privacy policy, no wonder you got disabled".

Posted By: 123Simples

AdSense (if I remember rightly) sent out emails to any website owners using their DART policy stating that somewhere you had to make a point about users visiting your site had the option to know about the policy, and how they could remove cookies -
https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=48182" rel="nofollow - Click here to read through their policy

Also note this comment -
Google Advertising Cookies

AdSense publishers must have and abide by a privacy policy that discloses that third parties may be placing and reading cookies on your users' browsers, or using web beacons to collect information as a result of ad serving on your website

https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=100557" rel="nofollow - This page explains about preparing the Privacy Policy (especially if you are using Google Ads)
I hope that helps Paul

Google do not like ads being used on forums I would certainly NOT recommend using Google Adsense on your forum as the likely hood of being kicked off Adsense is high and once kicked off they keep the money you have earned and you will never be able to open a new account again.

Instead I would recommend looking at affiliate programs like http://www.viglink.com/?vgref=12412" rel="nofollow - VigLink which are specially there to monetise forum content.

There are also new EU privacy laws coming in to affect very soon on the type of cookies that are set by ads such as Adsense. We are waiting for the government to come out with guidelines on how to implement opting out of these ad tracking cookies which sounds like it will be some type of warning message popping up when you enter the site to allow the user to opt out of cookie tracking for ads.

Hi Bruce,

I want to open another hosted plan forum with you very soon.

Questions:

1).

I realise i will have to open a support ticket, but before i do, i need to know my options.

I have some pics that i want put in the header, i have made them all the same height (90 pixels)

Can i have a pic on the left to replace the webwiz logo, with text next to it (forumname) a pic in the middle & pic on the right?

2).

If i purchase the package tomorrow morning, would you be able to load it up by tomorrow afternoon? i will also get the domain name from you too (.com).

3).

What version will be uploaded?

I cannot answer for Bruce but Paul this would be my understanding of your question(s)

1. Forum Header images - these can be placed across the top, but remember that the page width will govern the image sizes - It's not as simple as having 3 images spaced across the page with text, as you would have to setup some sort of CSS to space and align the images correctly

2. A domain name will take up to 24 hours to propagate - you might see it, but it still takes a few hours I guess from start to finish.

3. The latest stable release version - 9.73 I believe (certainly not a beta version of 10)
