After just 1 day of testing I'm delighted with the ease of installation and new features. I'm particularly pleased I no longer need to fiddle so much (copy files and edit) when a new release comes out because header, footer, birthdays and SMTP Port are now in the database. Thanks!

I still have to copy the \uploads folder (fair enough) and my CSS styles files (which also need checking line by line for some releases - painfully). Also log files (optionally). I can live with that but a couple of other things might easily be added to the database "control file".

  1. Some may not realise, but searches are restricted to "recent" posts or topics only. Consequently, I edit quick_search.asp to change the hidden field AGE from the default of 6 to 9999. This field could be in the database.
  2. Also, I edit search_form.asp to change the default ("selected") for AGE to 0 (Any Date). Again, this field could be in the database.

A couple of small matters I noted in Admin:

  1. "Enable Custom Haeder and Footer:" - spell HEADER
  2. "Topic Rating System: When enabled this allows Members to rate Topics on a scale of 1 to 4, 4 being the best." - SHOULD BE "1 to 5" with 5 as the best I believe.

Looking forward to the live release! Great work!

Just tried the "Server Requirements Test" - admin_server_test.asp.

It ran at 50% CPU on my twin core server for a while then timed out (message below). Do I really need to extend the default time-out period or is something wrong...is this an intensive process or is there a fault.

W2K server with MSSQL2005 hardly loaded at all!

------------------------------------------------------

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0113'

Script timed out

/forum10/admin_server_test.asp

The maximum amount of time for a script to execute was exceeded. You can change this limit by specifying a new value for the property Server.ScriptTimeout or by changing the value in the IIS administration tools.

Ladder Groups:

In admin it says "Click the Ladder Group Name to change the details and settings for that Ladder Group."

However, all I can do is create and delete a group name - what details and settings? What am I missing here?

Using Beta 2 (http://forums.webwiz.net/ladder-groups_topic29322.html)

Thanks for the feedback.

The "Server Requirements Test" should only take a few seconds at most to run. It does connect to our license servers to test for connectivity, I suspect you maybe running on a closed system or behind a proxy and so this part is causing the timeout.

On the Ladder Groups page you can click the Ladder Group Name to edit the name of the Ladder Group. There are no other settings associated with Ladder Groups.

Many thanks...yes I suspect the licence server was/is the issue. Indeed when I registered the software a day or so ago using my URL and code the licence server took ages to confirm but it did work eventually.

I don't think there is a firewall type block therefore...also its notable that CPU was so high during this waiting period.

After replying I tried again.  On clicking the test, the mouse went egg-timer but no page changes displayed. W3WP.exe was running flat out even after I quit the browser...it eventually stopped.

I then tried the V9 test which worked in less than 1 second. I then went back to the V10 test and that too worked....not sure what happened but it became unjammed...

EDIT: Yes this happened again...I noted that ASPJPEG was required, installed it which necessitated an IIS restart. After that the V10 test "looped" again. However, when I did a V9 test the subsequent V10 test worked perfectly and instantly.

Something is hanging up IIS on my box...

The only change between version 9 and version 10 on the server test page is the additional test for ASPJPEG

Thanks...strange, remains outstanding.

A further issue in both IE and Opera...I can see on the tabs and/or in the address bar our logo (favicon). In V9 I always see it, in V10 I see the WebWiz logo instead EXCEPT when I click on ADMIN then our logo shows up.

You would need to update the favicon.ico with your own. Browsers do cache favicons so you may not see it update straight away in browsers.

Thanks...solved. I didn't realise there is a WWF favicon file in the \forum folder...I replaced it and now everything works fine.

Strangely, this was not necessary in V9....I simply had my own favicon file in the root folder.

I acknowledge the following are all minor issues. I'm simply letting you know as they can be fixed easily to keep WWF looking 100% sharp!

I just noticed a small formatting issue. When you try to thank yourself a square box tells you "You can not thank yourself":

  1. when its a closed topic the QUOTE and REPLY options don't show...the result is that the square box goes off-screen to the right so one needs to scroll right.
  2. it should read "cannot"

A couple of typos in admin:

  1. Cookie Domain
This is the domain the cookies are created for. An incorrect domain will mean that cookies will not work. This should be left blank unless frames are coursing (<CHANGE TO "CAUSING") cookies to not be set correctly.
  2. URL Rewriting:
If you are using URL Rewriting then enabled (<CHANGE TO "ENABLE") this to improve Search Engine Indexing. You can tell if your are using URL writing if the page names within your forum end in '.html'.
  3. Create Sessions for Search Engines (NOT RECOMENDED): (<CHANGE TO "RECOMMENDED")
It is recommended that you do NOT enable this feature. By keeping this feature disabled, known Search Engines will not have an SID number added to URL's, which improves Search Engine Indexing.

I see you have made these mods for the final release...thanks!

I refer back to the problem of the server requirements test hanging up my CPU until W3WP.exe timed out.

I just installed the final...the same issue occurred again after a reboot...this time with version 9 test after which timed out...but the second time it and version 10 worked instantly...what is it that might be looping W3WP the first time this and indeed the licence registration functions are run?

The server test page doe not have any loop code it runs one test to connect to our network using Microsoft.XMLHTTP component. It then runs a number of tests to see what components are installed by attempting to create an instance of that component as an object, if it fails to create the object then the component is not installed.

It is all fairly simple and apart from adding in the test for AspJPEG the server test page has not been changed since 2007.

I have a feeling that this issue maybe related to your network as the Microsoft.XMLHTTP component can cause high CPU usage if it is unable to connect to the resource and will stay there till it times out. You can use other components like MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP or MSXML3.ServerXMLHTTP which perform better but find that older servers do not always have these components. The Microsoft.XMLHTTP one is part of IE and so is found on all servers allowing support back to Windows 2000.

I acknowledge there is no loop in your code and that the issue apparently existed with WWF9 too...

...I suspect something is being asked of IIS and is failing to complete properly the first time yet works in a split second on the subsequent attempt.

Lets not forget something very similar also happened when I simply tried to do licensing...is that a clue?

To help, I am noticing nothing in the event log. There is little network involved as the browser, iis and sql server are on the same box. I don't know the components you mentioned...but you probably mean IIS web server not IE browser as this happens with both Opera and IE browsers.

Strange...if I get any more clues I'll post...

As you mention this happens with licensing also it certainly sounds like an issue with Microsoft.XMLHTTP on your server.

Microsoft.XMLHTTP is part of IE (yes the web browser). To see if you can fix the issue try upgrading or reinstalling IE and see if that clears up the issue.

Sorry to be a pain Bruce (I am not familiar with this stuff)...

Reinstalling IE8 is not going to be easy.

If I install a later (non-IE) version of MSXML will your asp files use that properly instead? You mention MSXML2 and MSXML3 yet later versions like MSXML6 appear to exist...should I go for the latest version or go for version3 to work with WWF?

EDIT: I note I already have MSXML4 and MSXML6 sp2 - should I install old version 3 - which version will be best and should I have multiple versions at all?

The forum is configured to use IE's Microsoft.XMLHTTP component as this is the most common.

In your case if you do not wish to update IE then as you only need to run the server test once to see what components you have installed I would just forget about this issue, other wise you would be having to modify the forums code for little or no reason to try and use a different version for the MS XML HTTP Component.

OK, I now understand WWF uses IE's version only (the old common one and not version 3, 4, or 6) UNLESS I modify your code (no thanks!).

I believe I am using the latest version of IE (and everything else) for windows 2003 server "8.0.6001.18702" so do not believe there is anything to update. I'd happily reinstall it except that a message reported it may well screw up numerous software installed since it was first installed.

This may be an issue I need to ignore although I hate doing that!
