I was going to upgrade from v9.71 to v10, and I ran into the old problem that I don't have WRITE-permission to the database-directory from the web-interface.

When I upgraded from v8 to v9 I fixed this by editing the "database_settings.asp" file manually, but this didn't work with v10.

Is v10 so different that manually editing cannot be done ?

At least for the upgrade you would not be able to edit the database_settings.asp file manually as you need to use the setup/upgrade wizard to run to not only write to this file but also upgrade your database to a version 10 database.

Your web host should be able to set read, write, and modify permissions on your database directory. These can be disabled again after you install the forum, if you are not using Access.
