The chat in its current form is not so practical. I was so excited when this feature was introduced but when we tested it.. it didn't seem to meet our needs. The fact that people's conversation remains even after they leave makes it even worse.

I think a shout box would be a much better option.

Yes so would I. Many of us have enough windows open without the chat box opening another. Then what people write in it disappears in no time at all because it tells you when someone joins or leaves the thing. It's not visible on entering the forum which makes it less practical. Also you have to keep clicking back to see if someone has posted in there because the chat doesn't highlight MSN style so you know when someone has replied.

Its been mentioned before but I agree that one should not see the buffer of some 10 lines of previous conversations when one enters the forum. In the normal way, people should only be addressing those who are present.

I tried fiddling with code but disabled chat in the end.

Originally in the beta versions the chat was not in a new Window, but many people requested that it open in a new window and so this is why it was change.

There are plans to further develop the chat room, at the moment in it's first incarnation it is just a simple chat room with basic features.

At the present time development work is concentrated on making sure that version 10 is stable before any new features are developed.

There is a buffer of the last 15 lines of chat history are shown, what people also want is to have a time limit, so you do not see the last 15 lines of chat from a chat an hour ago.

This has now been addressed so that in the next release you will see the last 15 lines of chat but now restricted to chat that has taken place in the last 2 minutes.

I'm glad it opens in a new window, frankly. With a wide screen or dual screens, it's ideal. I prefer thnigs I can move out of the way..........
On the rest - really looking forward to it as I know our members have been asking me since day one "when you gonna have chat??"

Excellent news thanks. Can we make it 0 minutes so no old chat is displayed?

Yes you can edit the chat_server.asp file and change things like the amount of time, the number of lines, and the session time.

Will look also at moving these options to the admin area.

No i've no problem with reading conversation from the past few hours in there and actually like to read up on what i've missed. What i'm on about is when you get.........

X has joined the chatbox

X has left the chatbox

When that comes up whenever someone leaves or enters it, it makes the genuine conversation stuff disappear quicker, thus people post in there less as what they see isn't going to be seen for long enough. Like if someone says something in there someone doesn't like, there is nothing to stop that person continuously leaving an entering the forum to get rid of that text, and that's wrong Smile

Is there a function or asp file to read chat postings?

I'd like to show recent chat comments on my main web site (like I can do for recent posts to the forum).
