OK, again bringing up a problem with weird characters in posts.

Check back and in version 9.X, didn't have this problem. Had a few different people check.

Now one question...
Could this have anything to so with the MS SQL server? Could a "language" setting be wrong?
Now sure if I'm even asking the proper question, but this is driving my client crazy!

Am I the only one experiencing this problem???

And as an experiment, put some of the "problem" characters in MS Word and cut and pasted here, with NO scrambling!!

Character encoding depends on a number of things:-

1. The Character Encoding you have set in the admin area of version 10. If you update this then any data needs to be reposted back to the server so that it is saved in the correct character set. This forum uses 'UTF-8'

2. The locale settings of the server that you are using. This forums server uses the UK locale.

3. The collation settings of your SQL Server Database. This forum uses 'Latin1_General_CI_AS' collation.

Is there any way that I can run a script or anything to get the locale and collation settings on my server without asking my host?

Locale settings will usually be for what ever country your host is in. For example we are a UK web host and so have the locale set to UK for all our Share Hosting Servers.

You can change the locale that your forum runs under by editing the common.asp file and setting the LCID according to the settings on the page below:-

You can see the collation of your database by using SQL Server Studio Manager to view the properties of your database.

I have an "older" test forum set up using version 9.68
Got to an old post that hasn't been touched other than viewed.
The post looks correct.

(go down to  "Cauda Equina Syndrome"

Open the SAME POST in version 10.03 and the weird characters are there!

There are lots of reasons that could cause this, although I can rule out the usual cause of page encoding as both are set to UTF-8.

It could be that the modifications that you have done are causing the problem. The fact that the post is pasted from Word bloating it out with non standard code within the HTML doesn't help.

It could also be the way the database has been handled, if you have used the import/export tools of SQL Server Studio Manager it may have corrupted the data and saved it in the woring format in the new database.

It could be the collation of the database is different in the old database to the new.

Like I said there are many things that can cause this and there are some many server, browser, and database settings that come in to play that it makes it very difficult to nail down the exact reason why you are seeing this.

BOTH of these links are using the SAME database.

And the C&P from Word worked ok with Version 9

The modifications are the same in both versions also.

There are a million and one settings that affect character encodings, nailing down which one is causing the issue is a case of trial and error.

You say that both forums have the same modifications, but they both look very different, using different CSS, side panels, etc. These modifications are not the same and I suspect that the more likely reason is one of these is causing the issue.

We have carried out 100's of upgrades of version 9 to version 10 of forums hosting our own own network and not see any character encoding issues like this, so suspect that it is your modifications that are causing the issue.

To be honest there is little that can be done from our end as it's not a coding issue.

If the forum was hosted on our network we could have an engineer look at your forum, trying it with mods removed and added, checking the database and trying different data settings, trying different server settings for the web site, etc. until found the setting that is causing the issue.

As the web site is not hosted here and the issue is not a coding issue, it's a case of yourself making changes to your website and database settings and trying to remove mods etc. till you find the issue.

OK, never say I don't admit my own mistakes. Embarrassed

The problem WAS caused by my "fixing" things.

Everything is fine now.

Even got to keep my changes, just needed to tweak things a little.

Oh, and even Word comes over looking good!Thumbs Up

Thats good to hear. I Had a strong feeling it was to do with a modification made to the forums code.
