Subject: re-register my software.

A strange thing happened today. I was on my site off and on all day and noticed it running somewhat sluggish, so I decided to reboot the server. After rebooting, the site came back up in the express/free version of WWF. I had to login and register it as if it was the first time I logged into it.

Any idea what might have caused this?

Eric

Version 10.03 SQL
Server 2008

Are you running a free version on the same website?

I suspect that you may have a second installation running in the same application pool causing the problems as they would both share the same application variables used to store configuration.

To fix the issue open the file includes/setup_options_inc.asp in notepad and change the application variable prefix found on line 43:-

Const strAppPrefix = "WWF10"

That's already in there. This is on a clean install of Server 2008. I have loaded no other WWF installations. I installed the server, then downloaded and installed the WWF 10.03, then imported the SQL database and started the web site up. Everything seemed to install fine. the site works fine other than having to reboot after doing updates.

This is the error we get when this happens.

He said "change the application variable prefix found on line 43" - he didn't say check it is there.

E.G. change Const strAppPrefix = "WWF10" to Const strAppPrefix = "WWF10X"

Also check the SQL database parameters in file "database_settings.asp"

The problem may not be another installation, as the error suggests that the database can not be connected to, due to a server issue. This means that the forum may initialise without the correct configuration being loaded.

To fix the issue you need to findout why the database can not be connected to. It could be a configuration issue or it could be a corruption issue with the SQL Server or SQL Drivers.

Make sure that your forums SQL Server Database is set to auto start by editing the database properties. If you still then have the problem try reinstalling the SQL Server Drivers and if you still have the problem look at reinstalling the SQL Server.

You may need to also contact your host to get an expert to have a look at your servers configuration for SQL Server to see if they can find the issue.

Thanks, Bruce. I logged into the server and found the services were not starting after reboot, even though they were set to start automatically. I enabled the retry function and now everything seems to be working.

Once again, thanks for the help. I appreciate how you answer user posts rapidly and friendly. This is a great product.

It sounds like you may have multiple services installed on the same server which are all in contention when the server starts.

It maybe worth going through the services that auto start with the server and adding a delayed start on to some. Maybe a 10 second delayed start for SQL Server will prevent the contention.

In the end, I just brought a new server online. I didn't have anymore time to invest in troubleshooting. The new server seems to be running without a hitch.

thanks again,
Eric
