I have an old pretty large customised WWF built in v8 (6K members, 250K+ posts)... I'd really like to upgrade to the latest version.

What I want to know is about the upgrader... I have some custom tables, and a few extra custom fields in a few of the original tables.

If I run the upgrader, will it just upgrade the tables with any new fields and add new tables - Or will it just have none of it because its been customised?

anyone done anything similar I'd love to hear how you went about it?

In fact I'm struggling at the first hurdle...

I am following the upgrader, and selecting the correct DB type etc... I have input my credentials, EXACTLY the same as the ones which are working on the current site.

But when I click test db connection it just hangs... I noticed its using the provider 'SQLOLEDB'? In the past on this past I have had to use 'SQLNCLI10' for ASP sites but still that has no effect on this though?

Win2008 server
SQL Server 2008 R2

Anyone help appreciated...

SQLOLEDB should ber fine. To know what the issue is would need to know more details including what page is it hanging on and are there any messages at all on that page.

On forum with 250,000 posts you need to make sure that the database and log file can grow to at least 600MB to allow tables to be rebuilt when new records are added.

The upgrade will take up to 20 minutes to complete on a database of this size, so may not have hung at all.

The upgrade wizard should display the process of the upgrade, but some browsers do not build the page till the whole thing is loaded. Browsers like Chrome and Firefox are better as they would show you the upgrade process.

Hey Bruce,

Thanks for coming back, its actually hanging at the 'test connection' pop up? It pops up and just sits there doing nothing?  Which is why I thought the provider type might be the problem.

As I mentioned above the credentials are correct as I can login using the username and password via Management express, and its the exact same details the current older forum is using?

Odd hey...

I do not know what version of SQL Server 2008 R2 you have or how you have configured it, but it sounds like it is not connecting.

If you are using SQL Server Express you may need to use the instance name when connecting:-

localhost\SQLEXPRESS

get_up, please start a new topic rather than jumping in on another topic on a different issue.
