I have set a limit of maximum width 500px to upload an image. When I upload an image (more or less) to the forum I get an error "Internal Server Error". The image uploaded to the server.

Server Compatibility Test Tool say:

Image Resize Component Test

Persits AspJPEG needs to be installed on the server in order for uploaded images to be re-sized.

Persits AspJPEG - Installed

You would need to turn off detailed error messages so that can see the actual error message to know what the issue is.

Have you checked with your web host that AspJPEG is both installed and is licensed?
