I have the URL Rewriting working, however I would like to mod it to include the forum name. In a previous version of WWG, and many years ago, I created my own Rewrite (permalink) system which gave links as follows:

www.agni.gr/topics/Kassiopi-Avlaki-and-Kalamaki/Avlaki-horse-Riding.asp

Note that the forum name is "Kassiopi-Avlaki-and-Kalamaki" and the topic title "Avlaki-horse-Riding"

Problem is, with Bruce's new forum code, I do not understand which file to start playing with!

Any help would be very welcome.

Thanks

Agni

The URL Rewrite Tool for Web Wiz Forums comes with two files, an web.config file for us with the IIS 7 Rewrite Module or an .htaccess file for use with ISAPI_Rewrite.

If you are using the IIS 7 Rewrite Module then you edit the web.config file.

If you are using ISAPI_Rewrite then you edit the .htaccess file.

OMG, no idea how that works!

Is the web.config file auto created then? Why do the rules (forum_posts) go up to 22 ?

PS My previous way was easier to understand, although not as elegant, (it created a folder with an simple asp file that was hard-coded to show the correct topic.)

It sounds like your previous version that you developed was not using URL Rewriting and was using hard coded files.

The Web Wiz Forums URL Rewriting Tool creates dynamic URL Rewriting based on standard rewrite rules that using redirection to rewrite the URL's.

The Web Wiz Forums URL Rewriting requires that you download the tool and install either the web.config or .htaccess file in your forums root directory.

This is a separate download as these files can cause conflicts if you server does not have the correct IIS Modules or ISAPI filters installed on the server. You can download the Web Wiz Forums URL Rewrite Tool from the page below:-

Hi Bruce, I understand exactly. My old system, which I programmed myself, did not use a dynamic rewrite, but simply a saved static file (hardcoded to show the specific topic.) Hence I was able to create links like:

www.mydomain.com/Forum_Name/the_topic_title.asp

etc

I have rewiting working fine with the new version, however I would like to change it to include the 'Forum Name' within the link.

When the Web Wiz Forums URL Rewriting was being developed did look at creating a folder structure that included the forum name as the folder, but found to many complications and issues, as so was abandoned. If you want to have a go at changing it for your own use then you are welcome to.

The present URL Rewriting system used in Web Wiz Forums has been in use now for some 3 or 4 years and so it now well established and find it works great for improving SEO.
