I am administering a Forum on someone else's website.  When a new user signs up, they're automatically in the "New" group.  Occasionally, however, I notice a user in the "Guest Group", which obviously doesn't have the same permissions, and no matter how many posts they make, they'll never move up, since it's not a ladder group.  My question is, how does someone end up in the "Guest Group," and how can I prevent that from happening, since we want all new users in the "New" group?  Sure... I can go into the admin section and change their group, but I still want to know how they ended up in the "Guest Group" to begin with.  Thanks.

The Guest Group is the group non registered visitors are under.

Members should never end up in the Guest Group. There was a bug about 5 years ago though that allowed moderators and admins to place members in to the Guest group, but this issue was fixed long ago.

If you are not using the latest version you should consider upgrading to see if that fixes the issue.

I understand the Guest Group is for non-registered members.  These people who end up in the Guest Group have usernames and passwords.  If they didn't register, how'd they get a username and password?

I recently upgraded to the most recent version (10.11), and some of these "guests" have created their new accounts since the time of the upgrade.

Are these members suspended? Suspended members have Guest Permissions

Check your forum group settings. Make sure that you have not set the Guest Group as the starting group. Make sure that the starting group is correctly set.

If you have made modifications to the forum it could be these that are causing the issue.

Apart from this not sure what else to suggest as not heard any one report such issues with groups and the only time ever seen such an issues it was due to modifications that the person had done to the forum.

No, the users were not suspended, and Guest Group is not the starting group.  "New" is.  I just created a new user as a test, and it is in the "New" group, as it should be.  Haven't made any modifications to the forum, other than changing the group these "Guests" were in to "New".  I'll wait and see if I get another message from the site owner about someone else having this problem.

This is still happening.  Some people in the "New" group keep getting switched over to the "Guest Group" for no apparent reason.  These are not users who were banned or suspended.  I wish someone had an explanation for this.
