I have the forum setup on two servers - one is my development server that I use for testing and creating applications and the other is my live server.  I can register users from other domains (i.e. hotmail, yahoo, attbi, etc.) successfully on my development server but not on my live server.  I also use CDONTS on my live server for other applications all of which successfully send email to other domains.  The forum application is identical on both the development server and the live server.

I'm hoping that someone here can explain why the forum application is not successfully sending email from the live server to domains outside the server domain.  I did view the properties of one of the dropped emails from the forum and a successful email from one of my other applications and the successful email has x-sender and x-receiver in the header.

not sure if this applies to you but I had this problem a while ago and it was all to do with domain names.

basically, my ISP only allows emails to be send to or from at least one @yourdomain.com address.

what I had done was set the admins address to be something outside the domain. I'll try and explain here.

forum is held on http://www.myserver.com - www.myserver.com

admins address was set to mailto:administrator@differentserver.com - administrator@differentserver.com

whileever the replies were going to mailto:myname@myserver.com - myname@myserver.com it was fine because myserver.com was in at least one address.

when I tried it with another user. lets say mailto:user@theirowndomain.com - user@theirowndomain.com the ISP bounced it because it thought it was spam. IE neither the sender or the recipient was from http://www.myserver.com - myserver.com  so it was treated as relaying spam.

Basically what I am saying is make sure the administrators address for the forum in question ends in the domain that the forum is hosted on. That should sort you out.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Kev

Hi,

Since the server is in-house, this isn't the case especially since I have other applications using CDONTS to send email and they send successfully to emails outside the domain of the server.  I'm pretty sure that it must be something within the forum code but I haven't been able to find it yet.

Has anyone else run into this when hosting their own site?

Thanks for the quick reply, Kev!

There are only 2 fields in the admin/email_notify_configure.asp page to setup:  which email component to use (CDONTS in my case) and the administrator's email address.

What could not be setup correctly on this page?
