Tried it in the control panel in the SEO section by setting it to disabled, but forum page URLs are still being re-written to .html... is there another way around it? Deleting the web.config file also results in an error.

To remove URL Rewriting you need to remove the web.config file that has the URL Rewrite Rules.

The admin URL Rewrite option simply reduces 302 redirects by using the HTML page in hyperlinks.

Thanks...
Now I know why some of the Facebook likes disappear... it's because the page extension changes from .asp to .html... which FB treats as a different URL.
