Trying to improve sites meta tags.

Wondering why some tags have a / within tag and others online don't use it. Are they both ok?

With /
<title>Galvanized Aircraft Cable - site.com</title>
<meta name="Description" content="Galvanized Aircraft Cable, 7x7 and 7x19", by the foot or on reels. />
<meta name="Keywords" content="Galvanized Aircraft Cable, 7x7 GAC, 7x19 GAC" />

Without /
<title>Galvanized Aircraft Cable - site.com</title>
<meta name="Description" content="Galvanized Aircraft Cable, 7x7 and 7x19", by the foot or on reels.>
<meta name="Keywords" content="Galvanized Aircraft Cable, 7x7 GAC, 7x19 GAC">

Any input would be appreciated.

If you are using XHTML and there is a closing tag, eg:-

<html>........</html>

You would not use /> at the end, but if there is not a closing tag eg:-

<meta name......   />

Then you would use /> at the end.

Most modern webpages should use XHTML so you should use:-

<title>Galvanized Aircraft Cable - site.com</title>
<meta name="Description" content="Galvanized Aircraft Cable, 7x7 and 7x19, by the foot or on reels." />
<meta name="Keywords" content="Galvanized Aircraft Cable, 7x7 GAC, 7x19 GAC" />

If you are using old school HTML then you should use:-

<title>Galvanized Aircraft Cable - site.com</title>
<meta name="Description" content="Galvanized Aircraft Cable, 7x7 and 7x19, by the foot or on reels.">
<meta name="Keywords" content="Galvanized Aircraft Cable, 7x7 GAC, 7x19 GAC">

Thanks for your reply - I don't write code but this is what page has now:

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
<title>Galvanized Aircraft Cable - Site.com</title>
<meta name="Description" content="Galvanized Aircraft Cable 7x7 and 7x19 by the foot or on reels">
<meta name="Keywords" content=" Galvanized Aircraft Cable, 7x7 GAC, 7x19 GAC">
</head>

Do I need the / ?

If it has the "<html xmlns"(as your code does), then you would put the slash at the end of your meta tags.

And as Bruce said, any other tags that do not have a closing tag (eg <img />, <br />)

Thanks for your clear answer. I will add the / where it belongs within the html.

Will google, bing, etc not pick up code without the / ?

meta tags are very important in SEO...because most of the search engines like to phase meta keywords.
