hiya there

I've been trying to get to webwiz's homepage for a few weeks now but i always get the 'Page Unavailable' message can anyone tell me what is going on.

I can access these forums (clearly) and log into my website panel control , but NOT my client control page ?

Any ideas ?

Andy

There are no issues with our website at www.webwiz.net.

I would suggest checking any Internet security software or anything else you have that would block your connection to our website which is running on the IP 92.53.240.240

Hiya there Bruce

This was an interesting one and the problem is solved, but for general information only.

I tried multiple devices, none of which could connect to http://www.webwiz.net but could connect to say http://forums.webwiz.net.

This narrowed it down to my router, so i re-started the router and restored it to factory defaults, and bingo i could connect to your home page http://www.webwiz.net

I then put all my custom settings back on my router, rebooted the router and tried re-connecting to http://www.webwiz.net but could NOT !!

I then remembered that i had put google DNS servers as my DHP 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 this to solve a problem with my BT Vision box which needed to be pointed at DNS servers (any didn't matter).

I decided to change this to Comodo's DNS 8.26.56.26 and 156.154.70.22 and this seems to have sorted the problem, i could connect again.

Could google's DNS servers be blocking the page ?

The problem, for me is solved, but i hope it provides a clue for you and others if they have the same problem.

Have been looking in to this and it seems that Google's DNS servers are currently not returning CName results for any www. sub domain when you request an A Record from their DNS servers.

This only seems to affect www. sub domains, any other sub domain such as sub.example.com will return the CName record, it's only when you use www.example.com will they not return a CName record.

This is very odd behaviour and can only presume this maybe a miss configuration due to Google hardening their DNS servers to protect against DNS amplification attacks as their DNS servers are also not returning any additional information to queries.

We have adjusted our DNS zone for the time being to return a A Record for www.webwiz.net rather than a CName record.

Open and public DNS servers are increasingly being used for DNS amplification attacks where by an attacker sends a small packet with a spoofed IP from the network they are attacking to a DNS server which then sends back the response which is many time larger than the request. This then floods the target network with data bring it down.
