Hi again, having a rather disastarous start to asp etc.

Ok I downloaded the Guestbook and Forums. I checked the documentation and it said all I have to do is install IIS, which I have done twice now. Second time after a complete re-install of system from the ground up!

I still can't get any of it to work and have even tried the SQL version and installed MSSQL etc which is also available in XPpro, which I am using btw.

The way I have it figured a person should just have to install XP, install IIS, Install Frontpage (I have the premium version of 2000) manually transfer the relevant Documents and I can then access via my browser at the address of h t t p : // 'computer Name' or 'Localhost' or it's default dns 127.0.0.1 / 'name of Document requested' and it should put the document I have placed in the wwwroot folder. Instead I keep getting 400 error messages.

I can't publish as I am supposed to from Frontpage. In any format h t t p  or ftp. In fact by default it is supposed to install an ftp root folder yet it doesn't[?]

So I have searched the 'Net', I have read the tutorials associated with the guest book and forum and I have searched over posts here but I can't find anywhere where anyone can just say This is how to install and configure IIS (and mssql, sql server)in straight forward simple terms i.e. open/this/do that/do this/type whatever is needed here/ok/close/job done. Then next bit/open this/ click this enable/set/ or what ever etc.......

It really does have to be as simple as that! I can't see any reason why it shouldn't be...It's just a case of setting the right parameters and as for micro-soft help files yes the info is there some where but I only have one life...(apoligies for flippancy)

So can anyone help me out here please, as it's driving me (and others from what I've read!) up the wall! To say the least (Expletives ommited).

Thanks in advance....

I'm running in XPpro btw with as I said Frontpage Premium on a p2 400mghz, 6163MB intel chipset,

Thanks for the reply Fernan...I wish it were that simple but it's not I'm afraid or at least none of that procedure does any thing for me.

when i install IIS I'm supposed to get ftproot which I don't, I'm also supposed to get an icon in my task bar for an sql server and also have further control/configuration options in start/programs/???? (I can't remember it's name) MSDC or something like that, anyway it's supposed to get installed but doesn't.

This is driving me nuts...Off to try again *Sighs*.......

When you install IIS it created a inetpub folder, in there you should see at least a wwwroot and if you installed ftp as well a ftproot folder. If it does not do that you did not install IIS correctly. Go to the Windows Components Add/Remve and see what you selected. You say MSSQL is available with WIndows XP, that is not correct. With your Office Premium you have MSDE which is basically SQL and if you don't see the Service Manager Icon go to Start>Programs>Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine>Service Manager. If you don't have that option you don't have MSDE installed. Once everything is up you copy the guestbook folder within the zip file you downloaded to <drive>:\inetpub\wwwroot\   then edit the common.asp to point to your database. Do not used FP to publish it up. Without trying to sound rude you might consider getting a book or something as you do not seem to have the basic understanding how this should be set up.

also MS SQL Server doesn't comes with any version of Windows or with IIS, if you're talking about MSDE (Microsoft Data Engine) it comes with ms office and it's not the same as MS SQL, i think it only supports a few connections and it doesn't have an enterprise manager or any of the ms sql tools...

If you download the ms sql trial version you can install the tools and use them with MSDE i think......
