During 10 years we have been using a WW-forum on a small site for owners of a specific type of sail yacht. Members have been advised mail notification, if somebody replied on a post. For this we have used the CDONT component.
Now it doesn't work any more and the hosting Company says we have to use Jmail instead. But I cannot setup the Jmail component because it needs a mail client username and password as well as a port number. Our WW-forum has no opportunity to setup these information. Only information of SMTP, forum site address, forum name and mail address can be setup.
The forum is version 7.01 and has never been updated, because we have had no problems with it at all, until yet.
Unfortunately I'm not an expert in web Things, but hopefully a little help is possible with this post, thank you.

You would need to upgrade to the latest version which supports SMTP authentication.

There are also known vulnerabilities in 7.01 which is around 10 years old now and is no-longer supported, you should therefore upgrade as a matter of urgency.

Ok, I'm really no expert - how do I upgrade? Does any kind of manual exist for this job? And the data - does the db need to be upgraded? The db is located outside (parallel to) the forum folder. We have 10 years data and about 50 members.

The latest version has an install/upgrade wizard which will upgrade the present database to the latest version retaining all the posts and members.

Upgrade instructions are found on the page below:-
