its done wit Cookies

this site (forum) stores your User Code (eg "nunanmeF232322" i think)

and then checks the database to see who you are

for the time, you can do <%=now()%> and it will show the time and date

for the last visit, it uses the cookie again to see the last date you visited

umm well if you use the forum, you could include the common.asp file and use the strings... eg. strUsername (dont think its that thought)

and then you could do

<% Response.Write("Welcome " & strUsername ) %>

and that will disply the "Welcome numanme" on your site

and for the time you could use

<%
response.write("you last visited: " & request.cookies("lastvisited") )
response.write("The time is now: " & now() )
%>

but am not sure wot the acctuall strings are, i'll have a look later for ya

The way I learned to do it was to use a WYSIWYG editor like DreamWeaver and look at the code that did it...then I copied/pasted that code to another page. After that didn't work I learned about using includes, etc. which got me really interested in ASP code.

I'm still a newbie but thanks to WWG and help here, I'm on my way to learning.

Its true to say I’m a newbie to all this ASP but I do use DreamWeaver and Araneac and usually resolve it, the problem I’m having is locating the page the link is on

At the top of your ASP page (or somewhere before the name statement) make sure you have the following:

<!--#include file="forum/common.asp" -->

(With the correct pathway to the common.asp file of course)

Then place this in your ASP page where you want it displayed:

<% Response.Write(strLoggedInUsername)%>

Here's a simple page that does what I posted above:

http://www.rexpage.com/files/username.zip

You can see it in all its glory at www.rexpage.com/username.asp (at least until I delete it in a few days).
