I am running the forums software in a folder within my main website. The overall website runs https but as soon as I go to a page in the forums folder it bounces back to http.

When I turn on the server's capability to force http to https, any reference to the forums pages fail telling me of a permanent loop. The hoster thinks that there is something inside the forums that is trying to switch back to http and that creates the loop.

Does this make sense? Any suggestions for how I get it to stop doing that? I'd like to force the entire website to stay in https.

From the 'General Settings;' page within the admin area, make sure your 'Web address path to forum' uses an https:// address and that 'Enabled SSL/TLS' is enabled.

If you do not have these options, please update to the latest version 12.05.

I am currently running version 11.04 with SQL Server.

My address path is definitely https and SSL is enabled.

Do you have any further suggestion for me?

I'm leaning towards moving the forum software into a separate subdomain so that I can control the https separately between the primary site and the forums. Does that make sense?

From the 'General Settings;' page within the admin area, make sure that 'Enabled SSL/TLS' is enabled. This is the setting that controls the redirect to HTTPS with Web Wiz Forums.

Web Wiz Forums 11.04 was released over 7 years ago, checking the release notes, changes where made in 2017 in Web Wiz Forums 11.08 to fully support SSL forum wide.

Web Wiz Forums 11.04 would redirect to HTTP for some pages and HTTPS for others, with Web Wiz Forums 12.05 you have better support for SSL throughout the forum and also supports enabling HSTS in IIS.

Great. Thanx for the support.

My plan then is to create a forum subdomain and install 12.05 on it. That should allow me to set up the SSL better, and move the users over once I am happy with it, along with giving me better isolation between the forums and the underlying website.

Do you think there would be any conflict during the cutover if there are users on 11.04 at the same time as the new subdomain has users on 12.05, both accessing the same SQL database?

Look through the release notes at the differences between 11.04 and 12.05 I can not see any database changes. You should therefore be OK having the old and new forum use the same database.

The release notes in case you wish to review them are at the link below;
