My forum was recently moved to a different server.

When a new user tries to register I get this error...

Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occurred while sending an email.
Please check that the CDONTS email component is installed on the server.
Please contact the Forum Administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_SQLServer_create_CDONTS_object
File Name:- functions_send_mail.asp
Forum Version:- 12.01

What is this error and how do I go about getting it fixed? I speak directly to my server admins so if there is anything else you can add that might help aid them please let me know.

Thanks,
slappyJ

The error is occurring as your forum is attempting to send an email, but the CDONTS email component is not available on the server.

Change the email settings in the forum admin area to select an email component that is available on the server.

We also offer Web Wiz Forums hosting from our Data Centre on servers specially configured to host Web Wiz Forums. You can find more information at;   https://www.webwiz.net/web-wiz-forums/forum-hosting.htm" rel="nofollow - www.webwiz.net/web-wiz-forums/forum-hosting.htm

Thanks for replying Bruce.

My server team told me they have SMTP installed, and CDOSYS is installed.

In the admin email settings I have tried:

CDOSYS
Port 25

and CODSYS (both with TLS and SSL)
Port 465

and I still keep getting this error page:

An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator.

If you are the system administrator please click https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82731" rel="nofollow - here to find out more about this error.

I have recently updated to the latest Web Wiz Forum.

Can you recommend anything else to try?

Thanks

In your first post that contains the detailed error message it mentions 'CDONTS', not 'CODSYS'. Please check again your email setting in the forum admin area.

When configuring CDOSYS one of the main reasons for the email failing to be sent is incorrect authentication.

Make sure that you have the correct username and password for your mailbox. In addition, many mail servers require that the email address you use to send the email matches the email address used for authentication. Check that your forum email address matches the email account you are using for authentication.

The reason why all this happened in the first place is because my website got moved to a newer server and apparently CDONTS is deprecated and no longer available on newer versions of windows server.

So I checked with them and found out that CDOSYS is installed.

I triple checked the authentication. Forum admin email is the same as the Email Settings.

I tried CDOSYS, CDOSYS TLS, CDOSYS SSL

Is there a particular version of CDOSYS that needs to be installed? They told me there was 2 versions and they weren't sure which one.

I am still getting the same error message.

Is there anything else you can suggest or recommend?

Thanks

CDONTS was depreciated with Windows 2000, and replace with CDOSYS. There is nothing to install with CDOSYS as it is built in to Windows Server and you can't install a different version.

The reason for being CDOSYS, CDOSYS TLS, CDOSYS SSL in Web Wiz Forums is for different settings within CDOSYS.

CDOSYS is for connecting to the mail server in plain text.
CDOSYS TLS is for using modern TLS encryption to connect to the mail server.
CDOSYS SSL is for using an SSL connection to the server. SSL is pretty much depreciated these days, so don't use this setting.

If Classic ASP was not installed on the server, then Web Wiz Forums would not run at all, and not just for sending emails.

CDOSYS is quite old, if you can get components installed on the server then I would recommend Persists AspEmail.

Are there any error logs that could help when trying to troubleshoot?

I was able to make some progress...I registered 2 new members but neither received any activation emails, I made sure to check spam folders.

I went ahead and disabled email activation, I will monitor to see how that works.

Thanks

In the forum admin area on the page where you setup the email settings there is an button to test the email settings.

This will either show that the email settings are successful, or if not display a detailed error message for you to track down the problem.

I think I finally got it figured out.

Thanks for your help Bruce.

Cheers

Question:

Is there a way to remove the Error: The download of the specified resource has failed. Blog Posts.

I've never use that feature, can it be disabled?

I have also noticed that since upgrading to the latest version inserting hyperlinks in posts don't seem to be working.

Can you help?

Have you enabled "Convert Text Links to Hyperlinks" in the "Topic and Post Settings" in the forum admin area?

When enabled when you submit a post any web links detected in posts will converted to hyperlinks.

Thanks Bruce,

That option seems to be on by default but hyperlinks still don't work.

I have noticed that when using Chrome I set the Hyperlink Properties and hit the Preview button, it will say in the preview window "yahoo.com" or "google.com" refused to connect. Every site I enter refuses to connect. However, when I put a link to my own website it works.

Firefox error:

Firefox Can’t Open This Page

To protect your security, http://www.google.com" rel="nofollow - www.google.com will not allow Firefox to display the page if another site has embedded it. To see this page, you need to open it in a new window.

If I just hit the OK button the text that I wanted to turn into a hyperlink now shows as just plain text: https://google.com

Also you may have missed this question...

We have not been able to replicate the issue of not being able to convert text in to a hyperlink in Firefox.

The hyperlink preview window will be removed in the next release, as most websites now send security headers that prevent the website from being viewed within another website blocking the preview window from working.

If you are seeing the failed download of blog posts it means that you would have connected the forum to newspad in a previous version and now that newspad URL no-longer works. A new admin section has been written for the next release of Web Wiz Forums that will allow you to edit or remove this URL.

Finally figured it out...it was a permissions issue for the Newbie Group.
