Subject: New WYSIWYG Editor - please test
Date Posted: 09 June 2003 at 4:20pm

I am currently testing a new WYSIWYG Editor on this fourm that adds some new features such as a colour palette, and spell checking using ieSpell.

This new version as well as still supporting Windows IE5+ now also supports Mozilla 1.3+

So if you have Mozilla please test out the new WYSIWYG Editor under Mozilla to see if it works correctly. Please don't report any formatting errors when trying to edit posts created using the WYSIWYG Editor as this is not completed yet.

No you just need to click on the colour pallete buton again to close it. But maybe a more obvious way may be better.

Maybe the color selection box should show only when you mouseover, like in most major software. Also is there another spell checker? This one is only for IE, and it doesn't come with IE, so you have to install it and that is annoying.

Edit: Also, can you make the page so that when you select a color, the page doesn't refresh?

Edit 2: I found some good spell checkers on aspin that use Word. I think more people have word installed then the current spell checker.

Hello.. this is pretty cool.. so I had to check it out for myself.. cause LORD knows I could use a spell checker!

HUMM.. I might be lame, but the spell checker wanted me to download something, but only gave me French or German.

umm... Bruce I can't test it in mozilla because I can't log in. Getting this error:

Good job -borg- on implementing more stuff! A spell checker rocks!

I think a spell checker is cool and understand the need for a 3rd party app to assist. However, I think you (all of us) are gonna have to figure out a way to educate users on ieSpell. Simply put, some users have trouble with copy/paste much less being prompted to download and install an app. Maybe it needs to be an optional feature controlled in the admin?

Of course, I know have ieSpell installed on my pcs~~

The problems with the colour pallete are now fixed so the page won't jump if the cursor is not within the text area when selecting it. Also now when you move the mouse back to the text area the pallete will disappear.

I've looked at spell checkers using Word and found that not only are they difficult to implement but if someone desn't have Word installed it costs allot of money to purchase it.

isSpell is free and simple to install, also whittibo mentioned it is only avaialble in French and German, but if you check the page more closly all the mirror sites just above these links are for the English version.

If I can find away to implement both word and isSpell I will do so, but at the moment isSpell seems to be the simplest and work very well with the forum.

Very nice indeed with the color palet. Haven't tested the spell checker though.

My comments/questions are:

  • It takes more time to load the message form now (something like 2 secs more on my 128 m/bit conection). Not much, but maybe still worth thinking about.
  • Will this editor be in v 7.02?

Posted By: WebWiz-Bruce
Date Posted: 10 June 2003 at 8:49am

The new editor is a heavily modified version of the WYSIWYG Editor form the following site that you can download:-

http://www.kevinroth.com/rte/demo.htm - http://www.kevinroth.com/rte/demo.htm

This in turn is a heavily modified version of the WYSIWYG Editor from Web Wiz Forums.

Thre reason why it takes longer to download is that the JavaScript include file with all the code has gone from 50 lines to 160 lines of code to make it corss browser compatible and also add the new features, this adds an extra 5kb but your browser should cache this file, aslo there are 3 extra buttons that require optimizing that need to be downloaded.

If it works correctly this editor will be in version 7.02.

IE 5 didn't implement the Rich Text Editor to W3C standards, it was changed by IE5.5, and to get it to work with new browsers supporting these standards all the code had to be re-written. I have changed the code to detect if you are using IE5.5+ now so anyone using IE 5 or below you will have to use the standard editor.

I have also made a new colour palette if you would like to test it out, it's has more colours and is made to look and work in the same sort of style as in Dreamweaver.

that about the insertion of tables, I think  this not complicated to make...

Posted By: WebWiz-Bruce
Date Posted: 11 June 2003 at 10:57am
I have thought about that for a stand-alone Rich Text Editor, but in a forum environment I can't see there being much use for such a thing and it is more likely to course problems with formatting of pages if the tables aren't created correctly.

I'm quite please with the colour palette I've made and can't stop playing with it

I've also added some new forum codes that you may want to play with, you can see them by clicking the 'Forum Codes' link at the bottom of the post editor.

Quote You ca now quote messages without the need of also putting in a username of who you are quoting

You can now also use code block tags
for displaying programming code or fixed width data

The forum codes for font colours has also changed so you can now also use hex values for colours instead of just the 16 colours that where available previously.

'nother suggestion, have the mouseover thing for the colors be a little less sensitive so that if you miss a color on the border by a little, the window won't close on you.

The old editor was not compatible with W3C standards so has been dumped so that it is compatible with all the new browsers that are being made Rich Text Enabled, so I'm afraid if you are using IE5 you will have to update to a newer version.

For other issues not related to testing this editor please open a new topic, but deleting posts is disabled.

I think the first version of the new dropdown color palette you made was VERY nice. It was more simple, but still had the fancy pallette-thingy - it had all the colors you needed!

Now it looks overdone! How many colors have you added? Too many, if you ask me. Come on, it's just for text editing. How many colors do you need for text editing? I don't think it neither looks nor works very well right now.

But if you're just on playground at the moment, then just continue. I just hope this "look" won't be the final result.

Posted By: WebWiz-Bruce

It looks like some new software out in the last few days is injecting JavasCript into posts as it appears from a number of users, once it's gone through the filters it looks like < language=> in the posts.

The software that usually does this is stuff like zone alarm pros add blocker and norton internet security, which I have already added code in to deal with this, but this looks like new software or an update that has come out recently so if you could PM me and let me know of any new software that you have installed or updated on your machine, like pop up or add blocking software I can try and come up with a solution to strip this.

I don't want to change the colour picker completly as I quite like the part that shows the colour at the top and hash code, it took me 8 hours to write, so how many colours do you think it should have?

Also I have chenged the code to make it Windows IE5 compatible for the editor, but I don't have access to a machine with IE5 so if someone could test the WYSIWYG editor in IE5 (not IE5.5 or above) and let me know if it works.

Thanks.

The colour picker is great!

I would not change it that much - The only thing that I could think of that would be a nice is if it was like the Fireworks colour picker that allows you to pick from a number of popular colours and displays the hash code (like yours), however it also gives you the option to type in a hash code.

Posted By: WebWiz-Bruce
Date Posted: 13 June 2003 at 11:01am
I see what you mean now, I actaul based it on the Dreamweaver one that doesn't have the option to type in the nex value at the top, the  reason for this is that this way you can only choose from one of the 216 Internet safe colours.

On one of my computers the color palette is very slow right now. It wasn't slow with the first "palette-version".

How many colors? I don't know, how about 30?
That would be fine, if you ask me. Rememer, that this is just a forum and the colors are only used for text-editing in small forum posts. 216 colors, where most of them is just small variations of already excisting colors is too much. You won't notice these variations in forum posts.

If it wasn't because the text editor is more slow than earlier, I probably wouldn't take this subject up for discusion. But it is a lot slower now, and therefor; why not cut the color-choices down a little - who actually needs 216 colors for forum posts? Who actually cares about 45 "species" of the color green?

30 colors on a palette (6Ũ6 colors) would look very nice and more stylish than now! I really don't think anyone would ask for more colors.

Just my $0,25.

Wow, yeah it certantly has some very nice features. I like the "push-button-effect", which forexample indicates if you write in "bold" - just like in word!  I have always missed that effect from the editor this boards uses. You really should check it out boRg

By the way, I like the color palete more and more now. The only thing I don't like about now is the grey top color. But I guess this will be possible to change in the skinfile.

Yeah it does, but there are a few very nice features that very well could be transfered to this editor (perhaps the "button push down" effect ).

This WWG-editor is very nice now, it just misses the button-effect, then it would be PERFECT

It works great!!

P.S. The htmlArea editor from Interactive tools looks wicked cool!!! Borg, you should really consider it

Key Features

  • Users can create formatted content without having to know any HTML code.
  • It looks and works like a Word Processor.
  • Works with any <textarea> field.
  • It only takes a few minutes to convert your existing form fields over to htmlArea.
  • Works with any server-side software because it's just HTML. Whether you're using Perl, Java, ASP, PHP, or something we've never even heard of, htmlArea can deliver HTML content.
  • Completely free, don't pay ever!
  • Open source license, modify htmlArea to do whatever you need.

I had a look at htmlArea not long ago but found there version that is supposed to run on Mozilla was very buggy and didn't work.

Anyway, whats the point in using theres with all there copyright etc. on it when I can write one more suited to my needs in quater the amount of code and less buggy.

Ok ... the Spell Check work fine ... i tryed and it work, ( and more .. a take the freedom to edit the code of the page ( or steal  as you like ) and copy the image of Spell .. and follow the Java Script ( on v 7.01 the file is called ie_message_form_js.asp but now is called ret_message_form_js.asp why it ? ), and copy to my ie_message_form_js.asp the new code ). and put on v7.01 the spell check and from other message of this forum, i included the list numeric together, list button.

But i canīt make the some thing with the pallet color

On this forum the color pallet work fine and the spell also.

But when you think publish a new version ?? .. and .. how migrate the users and post from old 7.xx version to new 7.02 database ?

Or only you make change into the asp code and not into the database ?.

Y have a lot of mods on my actually 7.00 release

But the changes that you tell here .. work fine.

sry borg, i wasn't talking about this site's editor.. i was talking about the htmlArea.   since the conversation kinda shifted towards htmlArea, i forgot to add that....

this sited editor works REALLY good with IE.

Yeah, I guess you're right about that. But how about adding the "button-effect" feature, now you're updating the editor anyway? It would deffently make the editor look much more "word-like" and therefor more userfriendly to many users.

I have stayed away from making it look word like, as it looks so old and grey and boring now.

It's a text box editor not a word processor. I'd rather stay away from looking like Windows and make it fit in more with the Internet.

I see what you meen, boRg. But I'm not saying that you should change the look of the WWG-editor. I'm just saying it would be very nice if it had buttons with mouse-over-effect, which "pushes" the buttons down. So if you forexample have selected the tool "bold" then the button "B" would be pushed down - that way you can always see which tools you have turned on/off in the editor.

That's all - I'm not saying that you should add more "word-features" or change the look. I'm justing asking for a little mouse-over effect on the buttons

But if you don't like my sugestion, then I'll just stick with what we have now...after all that's not too bad either

I have messed around with that a bit but found that it does take allot of code to work that often leads to JavaScript errors in verious browsers and different versions. It maybe best to keep the code as compact as possible (less bugs and less bandwidth)

Hmm, i must have this one on my forum because nothing looks different. You might want to make it so that you dont have to hold shift+enter to page break...

The WYSIWG Editor is now works under Netscape's latest browser Netscape 7.1 which was released yesteday and is based on Mozilla 1.4 with it's Midas API which allows Rich Text Editing.

If you have Netscape 7.1 please test the WYSIWYG Editor.

You're probally confused between 7.01 and 7.1, I know when I saw it I was confused as to whether it was a new release or not.

But it is a older build of Mozilla still, so you are better downloading the latest Mozilla build.
