What can a Moderator do that a regular user cannot?

My desire is to make a user a moderator with the ability to control postings within the forum in which they are designated moderator, but not throughout the board.

Is this possible?

Well you pretty much answered your first question in your own post. The moderator can control post by deleting, editing, locking etc; the post within the forum you give them access to.

To set up a user as moderator within a certain forum you could create a new moderator group and then give them moderator permissions for the particular forum or to just set the individual member up go to the Forum Membership Permissions in the Admin section then select the forum you want them to moderate then give them the desired permissions for that forum.

Hope this helps!

I don't see any option on the Forum Membership Permissions in the Admin section to assign someone as moderator for a particular forum.

Am I missing it somehow?

Is the last one to the bottom on the permissions page, it says Moderate this forum [] or something like that...

I think it is an option in Group and Member Permissions, not in Forum Permissions...

Membership Administration
The following pages are to help you administer Forum User Memberships
Forum Membership Administration
Administer members accounts, make them moderators, change status, delete members, suspend accounts, etc.
Member Permissions Administration  <-----------------HERE
From this option you can configure permissions on forums for Members, set permissions for forum moderation, entry, posting, creating polls, etc.
Suspend New Registrations
From this option you can Suspend New Users from Registering to use the forum.

Right, thanks.  I guess I was confused when you said "select the forum you want them to moderate", because you actually can't do that in the Member Permissions Administration, unless you are talking about selectiong generic permissions for all forum members.

What you CAN do there is give certain members certain permissions.  What I do NOT see (again, unless I'm missing it somehow) is a way to make someone a Moderator in ONE FORUM ONLY.

In other words, here's the scenario:  I have 10 different forum areas.  I'd like to be able to assign person 'A' as a moderator to forum 'A' but NOT forum 'B', etc.

Looking for a basic procedure to do this.  It would be nice if you could select a member, and select a forum for them to be moderator of in the manner you describe, but I'm not seeing it.

Click Through these steps in the Admin:  (WWF v7.01)

  • Member Permissions Administration
  • Select the forum from the drop down menu and Click Button  Edit or Create Member Permissions
  • Click the button at the bottom Create New Forum Permissions For Member
  • Type in the members name (or search) and click Next>>
  • Now check the box for each function you want that individual member to have in that forum you selected. (The moderator permission is last checkbox at the bottom)
  • Click Button Create Member Permissions
  • You are Done!

This can't be done without modifying the code.

The simplest way would be to edit the register.asp page and the pop_up_profile.asp page and take out the parts that allow the moderator to edit profiles.

The variable that you are looking for is blnModerator (I think)

At the moment version 8.0 isn't even running as I am updating all the pages to run with the new database.

However, I am at present working on a new version of version 7 which will have some bug fixes and a new CAPTCHA security code image implelmentation so people have something while I work on version 8

You could try creating a new user group 'Jr Moderator' or something and assign group permissions for them to edit/delete posts.

Don't think you can set move permission without setting them as a true admin/moderator or without modifying the code.
