The person could be masking there true IP address or using a proxy to get around the IP banning.

You must have changed something in the forum code, or they are using IP masking in which case in the present version IP banning will not work.

It's not the database, more likely you have either changed something in a file or used a mod, or skin that has effected the IP banning feature, or they are masking their IP address.

Why don’t you use the Ban Email address. Banning dynamic IP-adresses and banning in ranges is no good, because the chances of banning innocent people is fairly big. Banning an email address however, can be hard work for a trouble maker. Each time the trouble maker get their email banned and get deleted from the system, they will have to go find a new mail adresse in order to get into the system again. And yet again you ban their mail addresse, and shovel them out the door. I am certain that they get tired of this procedure and loose interest in your board after a short while.

Just curious here, what happen if they use a false hotmail account when registering. Does this forum block hotmail email account?

Most people have got a dynamic IP address. This address changes each time the person logs on the internet. So in other words, the very same IP address is used by several people – not just one person. That way, if you ban A by his IP address, you might also ban B, C, D and E. That is if they use the same ISP. When you ban a range of IP-addresses there is of course a bigger chance of banning even more people. The reason why the ban might not work, is because you and your trouble makers change IP addresses each time they log on the Internet - thereas theyve got a dynamic IP address as certain fact! Dynamic IP-addressses is a common thing! So be caution! The best way is to ban their email address, and keep on doing that, till they drop interest in your board.

I have banned specific hotmail addresses without no further troubles. It works here! :-)

By the way, you might want to reconsider "you must receive a confirmation email to join the forum", because this function makes things real tedious for trouble makers. The more obstacles for these sick people the better, right?   This way, they will also have to use a valid email addresse, and not just a hoax addy!

Validating email addresses is the first line of defense against spammers.

Borg, don't you still know how to solve this problem? I have the same problem. IP banning does not work. Even on the new forum.
Help me!

Like Borg has said multiple times, it's not the forum software at fault. The users are probably masking their IP / using a proxy server / they have dynamic IP addresses. Try banning by email as has been previously suggested.

The problem does not in that. It's exactly. I have asked one of the moderator to block my IP address, then I entered with rights of the usual user, without using masking or proxy and I have written the message without any problems. What can you say about it? I have constant IP address...

IP blocking does work and has been tested many times it is possible that your  forum is corrupted or not running correctly for some reason.

Also make sure you are entering in the IP address in the correct format. To block a single IP address enter it in as if. Fopr an IP range you need to type in:-

200.200.200.*

If you are the admin and wish to test this you can block your own IP adrress yourself.

Blocking your own IP address won't stop you accessing the forum it just prevents you from posting.
