tell them to make sure cookies and session cookies are enabled.
And make sure you arnt using frames around the forum and you are NOT using a redirect url.

example:
your domain is: http://www.SteveReno.com - www.SteveReno.com
BUT...
Since you don't want to put much money on this your site is hosted with Brinkster (the free account)
but you use a redirect URL (that you set up with your domain register)so your visitors will see your domain http://www.stevereno.com/ - www.SteveReno.com instead of
www69.brinkster.com/stevepage/
that didn't look fancy.

IE has big problems setting cookies if you use any sort of domain name masking, domain forwarding, frames, IP masking, etc. etc.

Thank you for your reply.

In IE go to:-
Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy
Then simply choose to except all cookies. It's as simple as that.

OK. Same problem. Entering http:\\myIP\forum doesn't solve the problem.
Cookies on all computers were cleaned and privacy set to "low - accept all cookies". But still I can't log in as me or any other user. If I create a new user, when I try to log in with that user, "Welcome guest" appears again and I go pulling off my hair again.
Which document is supposed to be a starter? Default.asp? My guess: Is something missing there? Some *.asp or ...?
Please help !!!
I searched forums, tried everything and spent some hours trying to solve this.

IE has problems with setting cookies unless you connect directly to the site, by the sound sof it frames, masking, etc. is in play somewhere preventing IE from setting cookies. You will have to change the way you connect to your web site, or use another browser like Mozilla, Netscape 7, Opera, which don't have this problem with cookies.

Let's try with opera.
oops.
Opera states:
"A path in a cookie does not match page address.
You might want to ask site's Webmaster to set legal cookies.
Do you want to accept this cookie?"
A few OK, OK, OK and I'm on "welcome guest" again pulling my hair. What should I do now?
Btw, forum was working well at first. Two days ago I tried to log on - No can do!
?!?

You have somthing server side setup wrong in the way you connect to your web site that is preventing cookies from being correctly saved.

Ask your ISP about how your IP address works for the connection to your site, it could be using a NAT or some such thing. Anyway what ever the problem the error you got in Opera is proabbly the best clue to the problem, but I don't know what to suggest further, apart from get some web space from a hosting company with a full domain name.

I had this same exact problem with my own personal admin account and it was resolved (in IE 6) by deleting all the temporary internet files (sometimes hundreds of meg in size) and resetting the cookies.
Both of these can be done by the following path -
Tools > Internet Options > Delete Files
Tools > Internet Options > Delete cookies
The most important one is the first, making sure you delete all the temp files. It worked for me and I was having the exact same problem - being able to log in successfully, but it logged me in as a guest.

Hi,
I tried Blade's suggestion, didn't solve it. I erased all temp. internet files even to local.service and network.service, but I still have the same problem.
I created a new account and when I logged in it was welcome guest again.
I have ADSL with fixed IP and registered domain name, and my forum was working w/o problems few weeks ago. And it's the same problem if I connect to my site using IP address.
help, help, help

Contact your ISP as they probally changed the way your static IP works and so IE now can't correctly set cookies.

Hi,
Thank you Blade for your replay.. I've tried your suggestion but it didn't work..
dear boRg, if I register a new username it work properly.. ONLY if I edit my profile I login as guest.. I mean in the first case IE creates the cookies perfectly.. the problem rise after the editing.
Thank you for your pationt..

Ufffff,
I've called my friend, and she seems to be able to log on to my forum. I can't log on even with her username from any machine (laptop, at work, at home). So I probably don't have a problem with my IP setting at my ISP. Thonly diference is that she has Win98 and all machines i've tried it from have W2k or XP
any more ideas?
Btw, ISP hasn't changed anything

Well the problem for me was that my roommate on the same network when trying to log on would only come on as guest. Im using Brinkster with the redirect URL. So that FRAME stuff doesnt apply, I dont think for later versions of IE.
Anyway. I just needed to find out what the cookie was. Brinkster users it will be brinkster.com. Check your cookies and make sure that its not blocked.
Once my roommate set it to Always allow it worked fine.
