Guys, quick question....

I have this computer, its running Win2k.  I'm not sure if this a virus or something, but it was working fine for the last few months, but today.... it just keep restarting out of hte blue.  Sometimes it doesnt even go into windows, during the Windows Start up phase it restarts.

Is this a virus, if so.. which virus could it be?

Even when I go into Safe Mode all the time, it restarts.  What should I do?

Thanks in advance!!

i had this problem last week. turned out that the ecsmp (or whatever you call it .. where the fan box is) it weared out .. replaced it with a new one and computer worked fine from then.

if that's not it, could be faulty RAM / RAM slot or motherboard

If you want to know if you have a virus istall some antivirus software and run a scan to see if it finds a virus.

I use pc-cillin from http://www.antivirus.com - www.antivirus.com as I get over 30 viruses a day in emails and I find other software like macAfee and Norton use to let the odd one slip through. Been using PC-Cillin for 2 years now and never got a virus.

At the moment with this SOBIG virus I have had to shut all the .com emails addresses for this site as I am getting over 50 emails every 15 minutes containing this virus!! Luckly PC-Cillin is catching every one.

Have you been living on another planet ??    This and 2 other viruses have been running rampant the last week or so.  Fastest spreading of all time.

It crashes the RPC service causing XP and Win2K to restart.

this is another situation... msblast only restart after alarming due to the termination of the RPC service/server...

I think too this is a hardware one...

Of course i am, Same planet as you, Australia

Anyway, from what i have seen msblast will only cause the infected pc to restart on infection. Where as a dead cpu fan, etc will cause restarts before it loads windows.

I'm interested in the outcome.

oops, i misread.  Thought it was only after windows started.

We had an issue with a server at work which continually restarted and it was due to a faulty memory stick so that might be worth a look.

Cheers,

Andrew

Hey guys,

Appreiciate the help.  Here are more details:

The computer has a dual boot.  Windows 2000 Pro. and Windows ME.  Both operating systems do this restarting thing.  Its not a virus, because I finally managed to boot the computer up without it restarting after ran McAfee's Stinger, and Norton AV.  I have to keep booting and hope that it doesn't restart.   It sometimes restarts while windows loads and sometimes while windows is loaded. Since there is a dual boot, at this point its almost impossible to load Windows 2000.  But with ME, 1 and every 4 attemps it loads fine a for a while.

So I'm thinking its a hardware thing too.  But what?

CPU Fan?  (Over heating? but why does it load sometimes and sometimes not)

Memory Stick Gone Bad? - (yeah, that could be a possibility)

Hard Drive Gone Bad? - (yeah, maybe....but has anyone heard of a problem like this before?)

Let me know what you guys think,

Thanks in advance,
Majid

Is it taking long time (than usual) to boot? It may require disk defragmentation. How much free disk space is available? Also, you can try having a start up disk and boot using start up disk.
