Just curious...

[edit, a very long time after...]

in case anybody's going WTF? this thread used to be a poll about how people liked windows xp. it was then changed to the neverending thread... and the poll deleted

since then... we've talked about politics, rabid monkeys, apple, microsoft, soccer, football, etc.

Who ever voted "It’s terrible. But I use it anyway.", most have some issues. WinXP is one of the best (if not the best) OS.

That or they havnt used it enough to relize its a good OS.

Well there are some issues, like your PC stops working after the installation of 10 or more new pieces of hardware, then theres the whole liscencing issue.  Im perfectly content with 2k

I think it's pretty good (once you strip it of all the graphics enrichment, which slows down your computer to about 150 mhz)

Ive been using WinXP for over a year now for work and gaming, never hard any problems.

Im always installing new hardware, and removing it. No problems at all for me.

People are probably getting problems because there comp is to old to run it.

I've got Win XP Pro on my home PC's and my laptop, and i haven't had near the number of problems that i used to using Win2k. If you keep the OS's fully updated they run pretty smooth from what i've experienced.

I too think it is the best OS yet. There is no issue with exchanging hardware at all. The biggest issue of XP I have seen is the user as it works as long as you know what you are doing.

I miss the "File Manager" from 3.1

The file manager in 3.1 sucked.

You can get add-ons for windows that emulate the old windows 3.1 file manager. Try http://www.tucows.com - www.tucows.com I think thats where I have seen such untilities.

I think there is no reason to run W3k as a client OS. If you need features of it that XP does not have OK, but I don't think it really qualifies as a gaming machine. Make it Dual Boot though.

I don't really have a topic but i have a true story from a "dumb 911 calls" book.

"Three Shots and you're out"

A 38 year old man from Princeton, West Virginia, made an emergency 911 call in October 1992 to complain about gunshot wounds - three of them. Paramedics arrived and discovered the man had accidentally shot himself three times in the right foot - each time with a different gun he was cleaning. According to Sheriff's Deputy LR Catron, the man claimed the first shot from the .32-caliber handgun he was cleaning didn't hurt so he went on to clean the second gun, a .38-caliber pistol. When that one went off and shot him in the foot, it "stung a little, but not too bad." However, it was only when his third gun, a .357, fired and hit him in the foot that he decided to call 911. The man stated the third one "really hurt because the bullet was a hollow point." Just in case you were wondering...yes, the man had been drinking at the time. Makes sense - beer and shots.

i use Windows 2003 Enterprise Server for my main operating system. And i do think that it supports directX (or i've been downloading those huge directx updates for nothing). I wouldn't recommend doing any gaming on it though. I have two computers, one for gaming (currently formatted and ready for upgrade to 2000 Pro) and the one i'm currently talking to you on. I really like the XP style interface used in the 2003 environment. MadDog, i would have thought someone like you would have a separate server for your website. I was looking at those new IBM eserver xseries computers, they are surprisingly well priced, most of the base models were priced under $2000. The only downside is that you need to pay extra for the operating system .

A man in Texas a few years ago tried to hijack a bus. He would have succeeded if it wasn't for one thing, the bus was full of competors for the karate masters world turnament...

Another guy, in what i think was nevada, was caught trying to pass a three dollar bill. After getting out of prison, he proceeded to print and try and pass off over 10,000 dollars in 11 dollar bills.

That gives a whole new meaning to "Funny Money"

You can get a bare Dell Server for $399, has a 2GHz Celero and 40GB HD, this is well enough for hosting your stuff, get some memory off ebay and for 450 you are on the road, they are good machines and enough for what MadDog is prob. doing. That way he has his PC clean for other stuff.

To KC's story seems to wonder if he shot himself in the same foot, well not that it matters. A friend shot rats on his farm property with a 357 (not hollows) and there was not much rat left, so I wonder if there was any foot left.

A story which happened in Europe somewhere. They have Toll Roads, that measure the time you entered, the time you exited. Now as there were speed limits they could calculate if you where speeding the stretch and fined you right there. Now a guy was confronted of making the stretch in considerably less time that he could have if obeying the speed limit. He stated (there were no dates on the slip) that this was yesterday he entered and he took a nap as he was tired. He got fined twice of what the speeding ticket would have been for camping on the Highway.
Forgot what country it was thing Italy or France....

Two Kentucky men tried to pull the front off a cash machine by running a chain from the machine to the bumper of their pickup truck. Instead of pulling the front panel off the machine, though, they pulled the bumper off the truck. They panicked and fled, leaving the chain still attached to the machine, their bumper still attached to the chain, and their license plate still attached to the bumper.

YES~! Windows & Mac...

The bloodletting begins  ~ Praise Satan and let the fires of hell rain down on the unholy defilers of the hellgate *nixus.

Don't have much use for a Mac server... If I wanted a nix server, I certainly wouldn't go mac. Apple has nowhere near the level of experience any 'standard' server company/OS has. And nobody is really developing for them anyways. Why deal with all that compiling BS on a mac? Macs are 'supposed' to be simple. Might as well go for SCO Unix at that point.

Wouldn't you rather go for something like Solaris or BSD? We KNOW BSD works, and it's track record is impeccable. And it's got a much cooler logo than an 'X'.

As for servers running OSX, http://www.bias-inc.de - http://www.bias-inc.de does. But look at the site... it does NOTHING. It's brochure ware.

Things to do to macintrash
  1. Put chewing gum in the floppy drive
  2. T#2 causes thisouch a live wire (capacitor) to the parallel port
  3. Leave it for someone else to use
  4. Laugh at it
  5. Take the keyboard or mouse
  6. Flick it off
  7. See how well it works in an oven
  8. See what happens to it after a 5 story drop
  9. Change the boot files, oops!! there aren't any, well just delete the system folder
  10. Turn it upside down and let it freak out the next person to use it
  11. Sell it and buy a pack of gum
  12. Taunt it with a PC
  13. Laugh at it some more
  14. Give it to aliens, then laugh at the aliens
  15. Humiliate it in front of other macs
  16. Use it as a cheap paper weight
  17. Put an Intel Inside sticker on it
  18. Feed it to your dog
  19. Use it to scoop up your dog's crap
  20. Use the mouse as a laso
  21. Use it as a step ladder
  22. Use it as a plunger
  23. Try to sell it as a cheap, slow commodore
  24. Race it against a lobotomized snail, film snail taunting mac at finish line
  25. Give it to someone you hate with a PC emulator card, tell them it is an intergrated Compaq, it'll run like a 286-5, make their computing life a living hell
  26. Most elementary schools own them, And then they wonder why illiteracy is so high.

Just to answer the question about the mac... THERE IS NO WAY IN H*EL I'M GOING TO CONTAMINATE MY COMPUTER WITH OSX.

And to go back to the post about what u can do with a mac... I'd like to add a few things.

  1. Stuff it with 200 pounds of C4 and see how it works...
  2. Put it into a 220 volt outlet...
  3. Cleanse it of OSX with ur washing machine...
  4. Finish it off with a round on high heat in the dryer!

How come u never hear of MAC computers with viruses?

Well to hit the 70,000 mark we would have to do an average of 5 posts over the next 38 years (if my math skills are not letting me go). So assuming this forum still exists, I'd be close to 70
Solution: Don't use Mac, there is really not much to talk about. As the forum rules forbid topics that might really hit it off I guess someone has to find something original.

I don't know how you can compare PHP with ASP, ASP was intentd to be a business level programming environment from the ground up, thus PHP initially meaning http://www.php.net/manual/en/history.php - Personal Home Page Tools , obviously was a tool well for Geocities style personal Homepages.

Loads of stuff, improved performance, over 3000 classes like Imaging and sockets, pages are compiled instead on interprited, caching options, no more spaghetti code (pages are organised into scripts and html), webcontrols make developing quicker and lots lots more...

Bluefrog, did you just get released from a Tree-Hugger "love thy neighbor" seminar or what?

It was supposed to be a little bit on the sarcastic side... e.g. "Lawyers are human beings. Government is good. " Can you get any farther from the truth?

If anything, I just got back from a "Learn to love chewing your neighbours jugular from his neck and spitting his blood on his weeping widow" seminar...

But that's OK KC... Did you ever start blackmailing your clients? I can recommend some other good seminars

Or you could redirect them all to http://darkvoid.net - http://darkvoid.net .

Next rant - One reason why MySQL sucks...

<BOR>

The way MySQL handles dates and times is nothing short of lame.

e.g. 4:00:00 PM inserted into MySQL comes out as 4 am...

MySQL isnt that bad if you use it with php, its faster and accepts more connections than access the only problem with it is poor integration with asp and .net

MySQL is far better than Access, iff, you know what you are doing. Access is great because it is so simple to work with, and works very well with smaller applications. MySQL is overkill for a lot of things.

As for integration with ASP & .NET...   Let's cross out fingers and hope...

Good question. If ASP.NET uses a native connection, then it may be faster, but it it uses the JET provider, it will be the same.

Does anyone know for sure?

[ BTW: Can't we get back to some Mac bashing? hehe ]
