The more links to your websight, the better the listing. How about when you use two different webspaces, one from your I-sp (Internet service provider) and one from your H-sp (Host service provider)?

I need my Internet-SP only to get online. Don't use the mail-address or the url they gave me, which is way too long and 'unfriendly'. My domain is hosted somewhere else where I got an x amount of space incl in the monthly fee. Whatever I need more (from Host-SP) is charged on a per megs basis. On the other hand I got an 20 megs webspace included in my Internet-SP fee, which I have to pay for anyway whether I use it or not.

So my thought was, if I'll need it I could always use the webspace from my Internet-SP. But then I thought, hey ... even if I don't need the space, I could still place some pages at my-Internet-SP/my-unfriendly-url-with-lotsa-tildes-and-slash es-or-even-%20's/some-directory/ which link back and forth from my-Host-SP-domain.com/index.htm, just to improve my SE listings.

To the visitors' eye my main websight (Host-SP) is heavily linked from an external websight (Internet-SP), which theoretically would improve my SE listings. But I could also imagine that if it is too obvious (perhaps for a Open Directory moderator?) that it's just another trick, you might get penalized for doing so.

Is there anyone who's ever been penalized for somet'ing like this, or knows of such?

I don't think that it would make enough of a difference for someone to "raise an eyebrow" to...

The link improvement on your hanking depends a lot on the "quality" of the web page... (at least for google), so... a link from a page that has a low page rank wont help very much I think.

Agree that it won't make much of a diff'rence but nevertheless.

One could argue that it would be a waste to pay your Host-SP for extra megs, if you've got an unused 20 megs just lyin' around at your Internet-SP.

But if you'd get penalized by some(one) who thinks it's just a trick instead of saving money, I'd rather pay the extra cost to my Host-SP.

Just don't wanna do any thing that could get you penalized or such. Like the (dutch) say, "trust comes on foot, but leaves on horseback".

The SE spiders only see a page negatively if they link to a whole lot of sites on one page (like a link farm page), so i doubt if the SE's would penalize you if all the links just go to one or two domains.

Figured as much, but as to webdesign I'm relatively newbie

Guess that if it would really make difference, it would be too easy. Get lots of free webs with all just a dummy index page if necessary with all the banners and such. Then let'em all redirect to the same domain with some sitemap or linklist pages copied here and there once in a while. That would be way too easy.

Nevertheless, all of the above don't mean that I ain't curious 'bout how SE think and operate. That's all.

Probably better uses found in keeping two (or more) separate webspaces for archiving, separate sections (private?) or mirroring your sites so you can redirect users to the nearest mirror or wherever additional traffic would be the cheapest.

I'm actually fairly well knowledgeable about web design and searchengines and the whole net area. (Been researching this for a few years now)

Anyways, I have to recommend against doing this. Searchengines do count links as a vote for your site, but they also take a lot more into conciseration when counting a link as a vote.

The more links a site has pointed at it, the more valueable their vote is. Since your two sites would probably have little to no links point to them, their link as a vote would be pretty weak, having little to no effect.

PHP Freaks has over 5500 links

w3schools have over 9000 links.

In retrospect, your one link will be more effore then it's worth.

If you can't do it on your own, your not trying hard enough!

Regardless, using both servers is not going to hurt his SE listing.

The point of this discussion is not that he's trying to increase the SE listing here, he's just trying not to hurt the SE listing.

If a site is heavily linked out of context, the web site that is linking (probably your ISP hosted site) may get penalized. When linking, a few points may be useful keep in mind:

1. That the linking is appropriate within the context
2. Avoid duplicate content
3. Avoid cross-linking (linking between both the sites) for the purpose of increasing the SERPs.
4. As was mentioned by Sapien, it important to get valuable links thank the ones that are not rated or indexed by search engines.

Thankx for all the replies guys.

For now I've decided to use the (extra) webspace simply as data capacity. For instance (large) zips of pics taken at a family gathering. This way all the relatives can download the pics they want, and it don't cost me (valuable) space at my HSP.

This is probably a better use for keeping two sep webspaces anyway.
