I will be getting a new computer next week. I currently have more than 5,000 emails in Outlook 2000 that I would like to move to my new computer. I also have many folders under Sent. I would like to move them to my new computer as well. My new computer will have Outlook 2003. Can anyone please tell me how to do this?

use the export feature in outlook.

KCWebMonkey is right. Use the File -> Import/Export feature to export your selected folders to a "pst" file (the wizard will guide you through selecting your folders). You can then copy the .pst file onto your new computer and use the Import/Export feature on the new computer to import it.

It can copy all of the Outlook items, including contacts, notes, etc.

I tried doing this. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. Does anyone know of any other way to do this? I may be doing something wrong.

you have to be doing something wrong, as this is the best way to do it. export to a .pst file and import it into the new version. do a google search if you need a tutorial on it.

By default this export is not installed though, (if you chose typical installation) so grab your cd's and add that feature. Otherwise you could locate your current pst file in you local folder and just copy it, that should work also.

I finally figured out how to do this.

I have the same problem. I read that the Outlook 2003 files are in a new Unicode format and that pst files prior to Outlook 2003 are not compatible (ANSI format).

Microsoft say that the conversion cannot be handled automatically and that you have to create a new object (folder) in Outlook 2003 to import the old files into so that they become Unicode compatible. The process is described in the help section of Outlook 2003.

However it didn't work for me. I have just discovered that when you dod a repair on Outlook 2000 folders the files are placed elsewhere so I think this is likely my problem.

I have just successfully installed Outllok 2003 and it automatically updated all my mail. I even removed office and then did a fresh install of 2003 and it worked like a charm

I tried on another machine as well and did a fresh install and imported my origianal Office 2000 PST and this worked perfectly as well..

Interesting. In my case I had Outlook 2000 installed on a WIN98 machine. My folders were getting pretty big and I was about to export them all so that I could import them to Outlook 2003 on my WINXP machine.

I did something crazy. I ran the "detect and repair" under help in Outlook 2000 and I believe this is why my folders are empty when I import them into the WINXP machine. After running this utility folders are "recovered".

Here's a quote from Microsoft on the process: "recovered folders are usually empty, because this is a rebuilt .pst file. You should also see a folder called "Lost And Found" (without quotation marks). This folder contains folders and items that the Inbox Repair Tool recovered."

To make matter worse my WIN 98 machine decided to go 'blank' on me (turned out to be video drivers) and I reinstalled WIN98 thinking I had a good backup. I had files dating back to 1996. I backup my Outlook files on my "D" drive.

So I'm not quite sure what problem I have at the moment. The pst file that I'm trying to import does not look empty (0.5GB) but I'm not getting anything. I'm not giving up - too much at stake.

Thanks for your post.

I think you have it backwards. If you want to share (or import) an Outlook2003 .pst file with Outlook2000, you have to convert the unicode Outlook2003 file to ANSI for import into Outlook2000. Details can be found in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830336&Product=out2003 - this MS KnowledgeBase article.

However, the same article explains that OUtlook2003 will handle both unicode and ANSI .pst formats. You should be able to import your Outlook2000-generated .pst file directly into Outlook2003 without any problems.

Aha, That would seem to consistent with the other post so I must have messed up when I read the help text. I am optomistic because the file size of my Outlook 2000 pst files are what I would expect. I'm going to give it another try this evening. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the update. I have an archive.pst also which looks to be the right size.
