I just think I found a bug. If I create a poll and vote in it then delete it the next time I create a poll it tells me I allready voted.

I think -borg- should change the way the polls work to store the votes on the db rather than using the IP and cookies......it just don't make sense to me...... dialup users get a different IP everytime they log on to the internet and cookies can be deleted so anyone can cheat on the polls........also many users can have the same IP on a network and only one will be able to vote..........

Agree with you, it would be more interesting and every registered user will be able to vote one time only but porhapse this would take a lot of space in the database.

most forums store a poll vote in the cookies. who cares if that cheat. i mean come on how many times are they gonna delete their cookies and keep logging on?

Could you imagine storing each users details in the database for each poll they vote in, the forum would crawl along and be totally full of useless data.

It would mean storing each uses ID each time they vote in a poll, have 1000 users vote in a poll it would mean storing 1000 ID numbers for that poll in the database, thats quite an overhead.

You will only have the problem when you delete a poll is you start with a fresh database again, in normal use each poll with have different ID number so the problem woouldn't arise.

Well I was thinking you could set an expiration date on the polls (like a week or so) and all that polls data (exept the results) can be deleted after the poll has expired........just add an option on the admin section to delete all the info from expired polls.........maybe that's too much to ask for, but that's just my opinion......

The more I look at how the polls where built the more I think boRg was right to do them the way they are. And come on if someone is going to try that hard to cheat then hell let them.

There is no way to stop cheating in polls. Borgs' method is the best.

Here is a list of ways to protect cheating and ways of countering them.
Proof that you can always cheat in polls.

1------Not feasible
Cheat Protection: Log each user that voted in the database.
Counter: Make new accounts and vote.
2------Not feasible
Cheat Protection: Log every user's IP.
Counter: Use proxy servers or windows gateways.
3------Normal way
Cheat Protection: Set a cookie.
Counter: Delete cookie.
4------Borgs' way
Cheat Protection: Set a cookie & Log last voters IP
Counter: Delete cookie and wait until someone else votes or use a proxy server/windows gateway

There are more ways but they are all a variation of one or a combination.

Methods 1 and 2 are not feasible because of database limitation.

Yeah boRgs way is the best. And what is a poll anyway. It’s not scientific and if someone is going to go thru all the trouble just to get a few extra votes in then so bee it. I am just glad to have polls in the forums now. I have been waiting along time for that. I have already modded an include file that displays a chosen poll on my front page. I cant wait until v.7 goes final so I can upload my new code.
