Most link shrinking applications store the URL in a database and use a base 36 number rather than base 10 number to pass to the application via the URL. With Base 36, three digits represents 36*36*36 possible combinations so rather than the 1000 combinations to get with base 10 (000-999) you get 46656 combinations (000-zzz). 4 digits gives you 36*36*36*36 or 1,679,616. 5 - 60,466,176. 6 - 2,176,782,336. It uses frames. Basicly if you use that service what they do is give you a link to a webpage of theirs with your webpage inside a frame... just look at the source and you'll see it's not your page...
