Being new at this I am having a hard time with someone and don't know what else to do, maybe someone can help me.

I have an idiot coming on my board and posting things that are not acceptable, I have blocked the i.p. address each time and added the wild card as well,  I now have a list of 12 i.p.'s for this person and they are still getting in!

The i.p.'s are running real close to each other, I block the exact address then duplicate it except with a wild card at the end, but for some reason they always come up with a new one.

Do people have the ability to change thier i.p. address each time they sign on? Or is that something that happens with some isp's

It's really kind of ticking me off!  What to do?

Yes, people can mask and "change" their IP address if they know how to do it correctly.

Your best bet for blocking users is by redirecting them to a page that makes it look like the website is down or not functioning correctly. that way they will think they got through to the website, but it's not working...

They might not even be that clever, most dial up customers have dynaimic ips not static ips (dynamic ones change each time you dial)

Are you sure about that? My ISP gives me a dynamic IP for my cable modem, but the IP doesn't change for months and months sometimes...

Well this little turd is changing every single time! Making me nuts...I can't get rid of them

So now I have changed the settings on my forum so that they have to enter a valid email address and click the link to join, BUT for some reason my forum has quit sending the notification emails.......

I have tested it and I can send an email to another member through the forum, but the forum is not sending notifications such as to a new member or notify me when someone answers my post.

It was working before, but then suddenly stopped.......any ideas what I need to do to fix this?

My motivation for changing the sign up is so I can block thier email address to keep them from signing up.  I keep deleting thier user name each time and blocking each new ip address........I think this new way would help to require them to enter a valid email address except, any other new members that may want to join won't be able to join as the responding emailer is not working properly to get the link to them so they can get in.

HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

My site is hosted on an NT server, I have my mailer set for the CDONTS.......like I said it was working before (all the notifications) I haven't changed any of the settings, it has stopped sending the notifications, but I can send email to another member through the site.

Perhaps it is time to resort to more drastic measures then... Email him and ask him not to return, then if he does, mail bomb the hell out of him using his own email address so that he gets all the returns. One mailing of about 10,000 or so should screw his email account for 2 days or so.

If the tech side gets too difficult, the old-fashioned way works - use a cyber-baseball bat

Well I figured it out, I managed to fix my emailer, so now I have it set to where they have to enter a valid email to sign up, now i cna just block the email addresses they come up with.

Thank you everyone for your help!!

blocking just the last portion of an ip range that is 255.255.255.* is mostly uselss and inefficient.. the least way is to block last 2 portions that is 255.255.*.* but this way u can block out the attacker with about 90% efficiency how ever its not recommended bcuz u are also goin to block a good number of visitors from your website...

Ya know, I did just that! and they still got in!

But I have resolved the problem now by deleting the account and requiring a valid email address for them to sign up.  Now I can block the email address.

The funny story behind this, is after I resorted to the email thing, they tried to sign in again using a fake email address couldn't get in and wrote me a letter apologizing and begging me to please let them post.

As I am a firm believer in second chances, I allowed them in, they have made 2 posts and gone away, guess it's not so much fun to have to be nice huh? LOL
