Subject: Alternate to SQL Enterprise Manager?
Date Posted: 15 October 2003 at 8:22pm

Does anyone know of an open source (i.e. free) software that can connect to SQL Server 2000 similar to SQL Server Enterprise Manager?  Or do I just need to buy a Enterprise Manager license?

We used SQL Server 7.0 previously, and now have SQL Server 2000.  Our Enterprise Manager 7.0 won't work with the new 2000 version.

If you bought SQL 2000, id does come with Enterprise Manager and afaik you can install it on your workstations. Nevertheless there are a few options, check on download.com, or one I like is a web based one off aspin.com, forgot the names...

MS released a free version of SQL2000 called MSDE (Microsoft Desktop Engine), but it doesn't come with Enterprise Manager.

You can get Enterprise manager with the MS SQL 2000 developer Edition for $40-$50, but as noted above, if You have SQL 2000, you already have enterprise manager.

Wasn't talking about MSDE. We were discussing front-end tools, not engines.

Agreed, but I went to MS site to find the recently released free FE tool you mentioned, and couldn't find it so assumed you were thinking about MSDE which was recently released.

If I was mistaken, do you have a link?

Well I'm buggered if I can find the stupid thing.  I could have swore it was a MS supported tool.. and that it was written in ASP.Net

The only one I've found so far is:
http://www.aspenterprisemanager.com/ - http://www.aspenterprisemanager.com/

Maybe that was it and I just got confused.. Did anyone else manage to find it a month or so ago when I was plugging it on all the forums here?

Cheers,
A

I can second that. I have been using this product for a while and can honestly say that it really is good. This is the authors official website. http://www.asql.biz/DbaMgr/DownLoad2k.shtm - http://www.asql.biz/DbaMgr/DownLoad2k.shtm . there  great help file and an even better PDF users guide.  The author has put the FULL source code onto his site as well, (VB6)
