Subject: Moderators to Change a users group?
Date Posted: 16 October 2003 at 2:25pm

Is there a good way to Allow my Moderators to change a users group? I know I could just make them Admins, But then I would have 20 or so admins running around. I would like to keep the mods out of the admin page but still have the ability to promote or demote Users.

If Anyone Has any advice on this it would be greatly apricated.

I remember hearing about it before. You have to add blnmoderators somewhere but where is a mystery!

It might be in register.asp

the permissions are in the register.asp near the bottom..i think where it says if blnAdmin = True then ......

you would have to add some code so that the moderators can't change your password ... by adding if AND NOT lngUserID = 1

i think would do it....

Ok, I messed with it a bit and got it to work.

Here's a walkthrough:

(Line locations are approximate)

File: register.asp

First, allow Moderators to change member groups:

Line 1814
'Only allow admin to change the member group
       If blnAdmin OR blnModerator Then

Then I added a simple 'If' statement to restrict them from making a user an Administrator:

Line 1850 - 1863
If NOT intSelGroupID = "1" Then
       'Display the selection
       Response.Write("<option value=""" & intSelGroupID & """")

'If this is the group the member is part of then have it slected
If intUsersGroupID = intSelGroupID Then Response.Write(" selected")

'Display the end of the select option
       If blnSelSpecialGroup Then
       Response.Write(">" & strSelGroupName & " - " & strTxtNonRankGroup & "</option>" & vbCrLf)
       Else
       Response.Write(">" & strSelGroupName & " - " & strTxtRankGroupMinPosts & " " & lngSelMinimumRankPosts & "</option>" & vbCrLf)
       End If
       End If

After I tested that out I could change users group as a Moderator, but the change didn't take effect. The solution was at:

Line 936
'If the admin mode is enabled then add update some extra parts
If blnAdminMode AND (blnAdmin Or blnModerator) AND strMode = "update" Then

And I just added in the (blnAdmin Or blnModerator) statement.

Let me know if I missed anything.

Is there a way to allow moderators to ban users and not IPs?
I mean, in the part of setting if the user is active or not...that option is only for the admins, but I want it also for moderators.
If any of you know how to do it, i will be REALLY happy ;)

Thanx for reading!!

Moderators can already supsend/de-activate or activate accounts by editing a members profile. They just can't delete a member.

Borg, I just login as a moderator, and there isn't the option of "Edit profile". Only the admin can do that.
Do you know why???

Either you are running an old version of the forum, as you never said what version, or there is something wrong with your forum.

Moderators can edit a persons profile by clicking on a user profile and then selecting the button 'Edit this Members forum settings' from the bottom of the page.

Borg...I'm using 7.7a.
In the 7.01 version, moderators could edit profiles. But in this version not. I know because I logued in as a moderator, and the button didn't appear.

What can be wrong?

It's not moved it is still there in the same place just changed it's name.

If it is not appearing then there is something wrong with your installation.

Make sure that files are not corrupted by reuploading and that you are running the latest language file.
