Subject: Help with DB error!!!
Date Posted: 16 October 2003 at 11:30pm

Last night at midnight, the 5 MS patches got automatically applied to my web server. Since then my Access DB has not worked. I have tried all sorts of things to get it to work, to no avail (including changing permissions, using DSNs, alternative connectors, copying different databases, changing directories, etc).

The error displayed is:

Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005'

Unspecified error

/forum/common.asp, line 232

Line 232 is the command to open the DB. Everyone has Full Control to this file, the IIS admin shows write access to the file.

Earlier today, if looked like this site was having the same issue with the DB being down, and now it's fixed.

Can anyone help>?????

Make sure you are running the latest MDAC drivers from www.microsoft.com/data also make sure that the database type is not Access 97 which is no longer supported by the MDAC drivers.

I re-installed the latest MDAC last night and I'm running Access 2000. I reconverted to Access 2000 format to check. Same error.

Just for reference...I can run this database just fine on my test server, which happens to be unpatched. My production server, which is patched, will not run the DB.

Just in case it was just Access, I was trying to convert to SQL. I can't even run the SQL setup script.

Oh yeah, and I uninstalled all five patches and still not running.

It's just very interesting that the patches were applied at 12:00 and all activity on my web site stopped then as well.

Have you checked on Microsofts web site?

Maybe the patch needs the access drivers updated/reinstalled? Or maybe a virus?

I uninstalled / reinstalled Access and a bunch of other stuff.

Finally, I gave up and upgraded the site to SQL. It works fine now. Arghhh.

I've had the EXACT same trouble.  Following some patches, any ASP page I have that used an Access database has bombed.  Sometimes, after only god knows what, ti will work, but if I dare reboot or patch, the forums or anything else access related goes down.

The Microsoft site has been no help and no one knows anything about this.

Has anyone else had this problem or even better, found a fix for it?

try using the new access database that comes with 7.5.  See if that works.

I doubt that would work if it works on his production server!

It is on my production server, but I set up a new one just to see if it would work.

It doesn't work.

If I restart IIS or reboot, all pages will work for a few minutes but then it just stops.  All other pages work and page using my Interbase Database for data contionue to work as well. This only applies to access.

Sucks too, since these forums are sweet and Microsoft can't seem to get past tha fact that I get no error messages other than timeouts.

So is there a cheap version of SQL Server anywhere?

MS do a desktop version that can be downloaded free from their site.
