Hey borg, after messing around with v7 on my site i have a few requests that would help out
1.) Custom user title. Allow admin and moderators to give members a custom title under there avatar (a screen shot of what im talking http://www.maddogs-asp.com/junk/usertitle.gif - here )
2.) I liked how you could set different colors on the post box on v6. Now its just all set to one color, so if you want to change the color of the left box (with avatar and stuff) you have to edit the hardcode
3.) Make the login redirect customizable so we can have a login page on our main site and have it redirect back to that page
4.) On the page titles, can you make a variable so we can change "- >" to whatever we want?
Well thats all i can think of right now. Must are pretty simple

I think number 2 is a great idea. I use this forum for my Q3 clan and on our old forum at EZboard we could have title wars which were alot of fun. As we currently have the members only areas setup to only allow certain types of members in instead of passwording them, title wars are bit more complicated now.

When i was using Snitz (before i even knew about this forum) i used the user title thing all the time for a half-life clan and a startcraft clan. But i moved to webwiz after i found it and never had that option. Ive been missing it ever since

that could be as easy as adding another column to the db and calling it's contents along with the username, avatar etc.. correct? or is there more to it. I setup a foums for my college and i was thinking of making a dropdown for what major the person is.. so this would work for me. im just waiting for v7finalrelease1

1. Apart from under the avatar where elase in the forum would this custom title need to be displayed??
2. I will probally do so.
3. Is it really worth using database and server resources on thsi for what most people will never need when it is as simple as changing one line of code in the login_user.asp page.
4. Page titles, or aleast the name of the forum already comes from the database to give custom titles on pages within the forum.

In there profile, or anywhere else there info is shown

Thanks

Are you saying that the "- >" part in the page titles are in the database? |

Are you on about the navigation using -> not the title of the page??
If so, no that isn't in the database.

ya thats what im talking about. What im asking is that you put the "- >" in a variable so we can change it easyer.
example: i would rather have ":" than "- >" so i edit a variable and change it on all the pages.... instead of having to edit all the pages on every release.

Would be cool if you can place an image and a title. The only other place I can think of the title needing to be is the profile.

What about the navigation through the messages? it is now a dropdown box only right below, but it would be nice if it could be something like 1 2 3 4 5 6 etc. not only below but also under the forum navigation..

The majourity of poeple went for the drop down, not many liked the 1,2,3,4 to link to other pages in a topic as it means that you can not display links to all the pages once you get to a certain numbert, with a drop down you have instent access to all the pages. Right there you go I've explained that one again

hmm i could not find any message about it!! But nevermind. Thanks you for explaining to me borg. Maybe then it is possible to put the dropdownbox not only below but also above. Or make it an admin option.

I have a few ideas and suggestions id like to throw out for V7
One thing my users complain about is the lack of ability to upload their avatar directly. Right now I have them using the workaround of uploading the image in a post and then linking to the image for their avatar.
Also this may have been discussed elsewhere allready but I think polls should also be controlled by username as well as cookies and IP, this will make it more full proof and prevent any cheating.
Banning by username and disallowing certain usernames would also be great additions.
Lastly some sort of Database backup and restore utility in the admin control panel like that found in PHPbb would be really cool.
Even if none of these features are implemented, the board is great as is. Keep up the great work Borg!

1st people scream on how they want the beta 4 now and then they talk about adding huge features like database backup.
|
Posted By: adawg
Date Posted: 06 March 2003 at 2:35am
I'm not in any hurry for Beta 4/final personally. I'd rather he takes his time and make large leaps instead of small strides in functionality between betas. Also I was talking about the POSSIBILTY of adding a database backup for the final version. More of a food for thought idea. I'd much rather see the other 3 suggestions I mentioned implemented actually. But whether only 1 or 2 or none of them are actually put in the final version, I am appreciative of all of Borg's hard work.

It's unwise to let people use your server to host their images or avatars, waste of bandwidth.
You can read the very last post on page one of what I wrote
http://forums.webwiz.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=617 - about polls <--
People can always cheat in polls if they wanted to. Let's not waste time and talk about preventing poll abuse.
adawg wrote:

I have to agree with you on this one as it would be easy to make an account filter so you can add and remove unwanted accounts or limit people on the type of accounts they can register.

Ok I see what you mean about the polls, however I disagree on the avatar upload function. I think it would be a nice option, which of course you can disable if you are concerned about bandwidth. I mean V7 allready implements file and image upload so this isnt much of stretch by any means. People can allready do it but its not as convenient right now. Besides how much bandwidth does a 64 x 64 or 100 x 100 pixel image take up anyway, I'd hazard to say not much.

PHP is different to ASP, so database backup can be done in things like PhpBB but I don't think it is possible to do such a feature in ASP, the only way I could see to do it is to have a second database and a secound connection to the backup database. Then again it would be just as simple for the person to download the database and make a backup on thir own machine. Databases don't very often go wrong on th server, when you need a backup is when the server dies and you loase everything, in which case a backup on the server would be a waste of time as you would also loose your backup.

dont personally see the use for Avatar upload... if sum of your members need it uploadin, couldnt you just get them to email it you...
but the name banning is a great idea.... id be shocked if nones said that yet!

oh, i just remembered when i pressed "Post Reply"
id like to be able to use HTML in the Sig. as id like to use the <hr>
so could you maybe give a choice for "HTML" and "WYSIWYG" Sig. Editors?
|

Name banning can be a part of a "Account Filter" where you can have wildcards so if you dont want any accounts made with the word blah in it you would add to *blah* to a list and it would disallow people having blah in any part of their account. Can also add accounts you want to ban. Two features in one!
Scotty_32: you should edit your original post to add more stuff rather then making double posts.

Allowing HTML is a big security risk as it leaves the board open to malious code. Also if you use
in your sig it will be converted to <hr>.
The other ideas I am certainly considering.

also could i do for example
or is it sumfin like
red
?
and i kinda forgot you could edit posts
(PS like the new Emoticons or is better )
oh thats a suggestion, can you use the full MSN Messenger codes, like :$ and :@ or is it only :x for the angry etc?

There are codes for the smilies if you enable forum codes in your post, but they are a little different to MSN messager codes as they are surrounded in sqaure blocks eg. [:)] this has been done as it was found that when people posted progarmming code that contain things like :) parts of the code would get converted to smilies.

yeah i know about the [:)]
but wot i ment was on your angry face the code is ":x" where as on MSN Messenger its ":@" and i was just wondering if you had the same as msn as well as your own style, or if it was just your own style.. get me?
(PS <-- thats kool )

Everywhere uses different symbols, if you look at the Yahoo Messanger for an angry face the use X( which is different again.

i only asked cose there MSN Styled faces,
anyway, could you tel me wot file i edit to add the code so it will work with other codes i want (eg " " to be "[(6)]") ?
also why does the page go all funny when i try to scroll down when the page has JUST loaded? ill try an do a screen shot if you want but it did it on V6.34 or wotever the other one was, but it didnt do it on my site, only on this one (yay me i used the edit button )
and when did them NEW Emoticons get added...there pretty kool.. keep em comin )

In version 7 you edit the file emoticons_inc.asp found in the includes folder.
The scroll problem could be becuase the images don't have set sizes for them, which is not proper HTML but it allows the images and buttons to be swapped with new ones without editing the code. But it does mean until the image completly downloads browsers guess the size and then reformat once the image has downloaded.
I'm making new emoticons at the moment and slowly adding the new ones to this forum as I create them. Also I am changing some of the forum codes for the emoticons.

You could use a file system object to just copy the database to a different location.
But then again the chances of you loosing the first one will probably take out the back up to like you said

Believe it or not it can take up a lot of space. Take for instance boRg’s Avatar If you have 4000 hits to it would take up 16Mb and that’s just for 1 Avatar. That’s not counting other members and that’s also I nicely done avatar at only 4kb you may have users creating avatars that are 16 to 24kb because of poor Photoshop skills.
4000 hits X 16kb = 64Mb
4000 hits X 24kb = 96Mb
So when you do something like allow people to upload there own images you need to remember bandwidth. And also keep in mind that these same users could be hot linking that same avatar to the 13 other Forums that he is a member of. Then he’s wasting your bandwidth and you’re not even getting his contribution.

Scotty, I have the same on my work PC. I think it has to do with addons you had at one time for your IE. I seem to have that since someone put a Google Bar on here but don't get rid of it, you need to wait for the whole page to load before scrolling.

I don't know why this is happening, I re-installed IE6 but no change. Though it does not happen on my forum, the only one I encountered that is yours and str8dogs. It seems to have a waitstate when loading the page half way (the progress bar) At home it works with no probs so I am guessing it has to do with the computer here.... (Maybe Win2000 and IE6 in combination with Google or so)

Well I guess if you roll it out on a major webpage that could be a concern but for a small private board like I run, I think it's a nice option. As I said before Borg allready implemented file and image upload in V7, which I am sure if made available to users, allready uses up a lot more bandwidth than the smaller avatars ever would. I think flexibility and scalibility are very important things for software of this type to have. You shouldn't choose your feature set based solely on a high traffic scenario IMHO.
