Hi,

what form should the path be in for members to add their own avatars from their own computer files ?

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi Borg,

where should a member save the avatar he wants to upload and the path ie C\mydocuments\avatar, I've tried a physical one myself and it doesn't work so presumably it has to saved to a webfolder on a IIS or PWS and take the form of http://computername///avatar.jpg - http://computername///avatar.jpg ?

This worked for me but seems rather complicated for the average pc user is there an easier way ?

Cheers,

Chris.

It has to be on the web and in the form of www.mysite/images/myavatar.jpg

Or you could enable avatar uploading from the admin section then it can be uploaded from the usres computer to the server which is simpler for users.

Borg,

I have got avatar uploading enabled, and this is what one of my members is trying to do, but doesn't know how to.

How exactly does he do this please ?

Cheers,

Chris.

When Avatar uploading is enabled there is an Avatar upload link on their profile page, clicking this opens a window from where the user clicks the browse button which opens up a window to navigate their hard drive and select the image they want to use for their avatar.

Borg,

I'm using version 6.34, all there is is a box to type the path beginning http://

As I've said, typing in a physical path ie C\mydocuments\myavatar doesn't work, but if I put it in a webfolder on my IIS and use http://mycomputer/IIS/myavatar.jpg - http://mycomputer/IIS/myavatar.jpg it's ok.

This is what I mean by what form should the path take, and where does he have to put the avatar on his own computer and upload it if he hasn't got an IIS or PWS setup and configured ?

You previous post suggests that as long as the path is correct it doesn't matter where it is on his computer ?

Chris.

Right now I see, your using 6.34. I wish you had said to begin with.

Only version 7.x has the avatar upload feature.

In your version you can't refernce an avatar on your own computer it needs to be on a web site somewhere on the web.

If your user wants to use their own avatar they need to place the avatar on the web somewhere themseves like their own web space or web site, they then type in the path to the image on their site eg:-

http://www.mywebsite.com/images/myavatar.jpg

Borg,

OK, thanks, yeah, sorry should have mentioned the 6.34, but didn't know it was any different.

I'd like to upgrade to the latest version without losing my members and posts, is that possible and practical or would I be better off just starting afresh ?

Cheers,

Chris.

It is possible, but it is much easier to start from a fresh. Use the search function there are som posts about upgrading from version 6.34 to 7.

OK, thanks, did a search, looks both problematic and complicated, reckon I'll start anew when the times right.

Cheers,

Chris.
