I wasn't sure where to post this question/idea, so, please move where appropriate..

Since WWF allows forum members mailings, one thing that has been bugging me for a long time, is that, when you execute a mass-mailing, emails that can't be delivered bounce back (Which is good).. BUT.. there isn't any facility for automatically processing these responses, to then remove/delete the users with invalid email accounts.

As we all know, many users use free email accounts such as Yahoo/AOL/Hotmail etc.. so, at one time, their account was valid, but over time they go inactive, and are totally useless as members at that point (IMO)..

So, what I thought I'd ask:

Has anyone seen any ASP code using something like http://www.system-engine.com/Emia4Win.shtml - http://www.system-engine.com/Emia4Win.shtml , that can check the main forum email account via POP, download all the NDR's, parse/process them, and in turn generate a list of email address (thus users) that didn't get the email??

I understand HOW to do it, and could do it, I just didn't want to spend any time reinventing the wheel if somethings already out there.

Furthermore, since all outgoing emails have an unsubscribe link, a parsing engine (that retrieves these emails) could be written to 1) see what the NDR error was, 2) if not a simply "over quota" error, automatically run through these links to un-sub the dead account..

Make sense? Any ideas?

Thanks.

I don't believe it has been done but as this would require components, usually expensive ones, installed on the server inorder to get emails from a POP account it is not something I plan on building into the forum software.

Also I find that often valid emails can bounce back if the members SMTP server is down so you may end up removing members that are still active.

Borg.. The example component I posted IS free.. Furthermore.. if a users' mail server is down, the "bounce" will not contain the easily identifiable "no such user", "mailbox is over quota".. errors..

Thus, your points are completely without merit. Thanks for the reply, but, as I understand you to be "Bruce" (the maker of WWF etc).. what you wrote above is hardly what I would have expected from you.

*sigh*

Sorry, but this forum is written to stay away from components as 99% of poeple don't have access to the server to install components on.

If I start changing the forum to use components like you mention many people won't be able to use it.

If you want to make such a feature as a mod then you may do so, but one of my main prorities when writting the software is to make it as compatible as possible with the most servers as posible, this means staying away from components.
