Subject: Problem Activating Account (version 7.5)

I just had someone register and they received a message "There is a problem activating your account" when they clicked on the registration link.  I suspect that they clicked on it twice by mistake because his account was already activated.

Maybe we should have a message that says:

"Your account is already activated"

instead of saying

"There is a problem activating your membership."

He thought there really was an error, when in actuality he probably clicked on it twice.  He never even tried to login to see if his login worked.

If he hadn't e-mailed me, he might have just given up and never logged on.

I am using 7.5 of the forum.  I plan on installing the latest version very shortly.  So if this was addressed in the latest version, I apologize.  (I typically wait a few weeks for bugs to get ironed out of a new version before installing any new version of anything.)  If not, I hope you inlude new verbage in the next version.

Thanks.

I shall look into it.

But the code that identifies the user is changed when the account is activated so there is no-way to be able to assciate the link with an account once it has been activated.

Couldn't you grab it from the URL?

http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/activate.asp?ID=usernameAB78CDZ1BD - http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/activate.asp?ID=userna meAB78CDZ1BD

This is an example link.  I noticed it already contains the username.

Maybe changing to something like this would make it possible to detect if they already activated:

http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/activate.asp?ID=usernameAB78CDZ1BD - http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/activate.asp?ID=usernameAB78CDZ1BD&User=username - http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/activate.asp?ID=userna meAB78CDZ1BD &User=username

The User=username could be used to run a check on whether the username was already activated.

Just an idea.

And, BTW, thanks for the quick response.

Yeah.

And and you could also do something like this:

http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/activate.asp?ID=AB78CDZ1BDusername - http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/activate.asp?ID=AB78CD Z1BDusername

where the first 10 characters are confirmation code and anything after that is the username.

Some e-mail programs don't like & character in the URL for some reason, so this may be a way around that and still be able to detect the username.

I guess this has not been fixed yet...I've been wondering why nearly every day a new member emails me saying they have problems activating. I then examine the file, find they are already active and email a reply to that effect.

I hope there is a way to resolve this as it consumes a bit of time. If it can't be fixed then perhaps a comment could be added to the error message that they should try to log in anyway as they may have registered twice?

You could always change the text yourself, all text is held in the language_fules/language_file_inc.asp file. Just edit the file with a text editor in the place where you find the text for the activation error message.

Many thanks for a fast reply with a workaround.

I am always keen to use package software as it comes to avoid doing and testing modifications again when there is an upgrade. I already have to think about skin, header and other appearance files so I hope you can change something in the package itself. One suggestion might be:

Const strTxtErrorWithActvation = "There is a problem activating your membership.<br /><br />Your membership may be active already so please try logging in before contacting the "

I shall look into making the changes in the final version. I've been planning on modifying the code to be able to tell if the account is active or not, but as of yet have not had chance to do it.
