Great -boRg- !
Can you give a quick explanation of what you did to the active users function that makes it work better with Access? I don't expect a huge dissertation on the subject (you've got better things to do with your time) but a simple "I'm using application variables rather than a database update" or whatever would be nice...
Thanks for your hard work.

You have it exactly right.
An array stored at application level is now used to store the active users in the forum.
This will mean less hits on the database speeding the forum up if you
sue active users list, for both the Access and SQL server versions.

In the admin statistics page I get the following error:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a01f4'
Variable is undefined: 'SortActiveUsersList'
/forum/admin/statistics.asp, line 450
I also have another problem with new users trying to activate their account. They just get an error message telling them to contact the forum administrator. I can se them but their accounts are not active.
What can I do about this?
|

Date Posted: 18 November 2003 at 6:27am
For the first error, you need to upload the new functions_comm.asp file in the functions folder of the admin area.
For the second error, the activation page has not changed for many
versions, so check that it is uploaded correctly and your setup info in
the admin area is correct for the email settings.

NEWBIE question....
Can I use my current 7.51a database with this new revision OR must I use the db that came with the 7.6 version?

Yes. Nothing is changed in the database.

This will mean less hits on the database, but more memory used on the server. So check with your web hosts first that they are OK with you using application level veriables.
|
3 quick questions:
1. is MS SQL version also coded in this manner
2. if ISP doesn't allow app. variables then we would need to turn off active users?
3. is memory usage based on name, ip, author ID or other?

Not wanting to spam, i'd just like to say i like the way the versions are coming out.
I rather have a (patch style) update every few weeks then whole new versions every many months
- Helps understand the forum better - Use the new funtions sooner - Improvements are applied faster - Easier upgrade processes - Increased interest and tweaking in the applications
only to name some.
Congrats Bruce, you're one hell of a programmer

Yes, it would be helpful if there was a FULL VERSION and then also an UPGRADE VERSION with just the incremental changes.
It is a pain to download the whole thing just for a couple of files that changed. And, I would like to look at the version history before downloading to see if I want to upgrade.
I am heavily modifying the forum, and there are some things that I may not want to change.

Agreed, especially when there very minor changes that don't effect one version. Such as the change for the Active Users which really didn't affect SQL Server users.
Will there ever be a time when there is an optimized SQL Server version? With just minor rewrites, I have been able to increase performance by 20-30 percent on some pages. With all the recent updates, I have the choice of using a older quicker version that I modified or a new slick slow version, so I stick with the faster version which mean less MODs from me as I'm less likely to MOD a version of the forum that I'm not using.
I would love to see a SQL optimized version of the forum and would offer whatever asisstance was needed to see it done. Otherwise 7.51a with the none Active User pages of 7.6, will be my last download as I will focus on optimizinig that version and sticking with it as long as it serves my needs.

As there are less calls to the database the SQL server version is speeded up by using version 7.6
There is arround 3 less database hits per page now that application
level veriables are used to store the active users data, which makes each page
of the forum load fater on both the Access and SQL server versions.

If you are using the "out of box" solution this is ture, but I converted everything except the ForumPermission function call down to one SQL call, the Active Users enhancement doesn't really help me.
When I get back into community developing mode (probably in December) I'll be taking a really hard look at WWF and its database and be optimizing it for SQL which will include table changes, adding pre-built table views and building new stored procudeures.
Having undetaken a similar task with version 7.01, it will probably take the full month to complete, but I expect to see 50-60% performance improvements on most pages. In just looking at the default page, I found a way to cut all the SQL calls for the category and forums down from 1 call per category (plus one call to get the category) down to one call altogether by just creating a join for the Forum and Category tables. That alone is a HUGE improvement.

Looking at the history file these files have change
1. group_details.asp - fixed javascript bug on page 2. member_control_panel.asp - hyperlink closing tag missing 3. register.asp - same as above 4. email_notify_subscriptions.asp - same as above 5. printer_friendly_posts.asp - changed so that each post is displayed in it's own table so that formatting is not carried over. 6. emoticons_inc.asp - added new emoticons to this file and new images in the smileys folder
The following files are changed for the new non-database active users tracking 1. active_users_inc.asp 2. default.asp 3. active_users.asp 4. functions_common.asp - in both the main forum and admin section 5. statistics.asp
Since I have customized my wwf, would you recommend only updating the first 6 files. Would that be a safest wat to start the update?
http://www.mbd2.com/forum/ - www.mbd2.com/forum/
The last files dealing with active users may involve more time then worth at the moment. I have a lot of stats on the front page.
Is there a spead increase too? Reading above post and little confused. Running Acess version.
Thanks

You need to update all the cahnged files for it to be successful.
If you are using the active users feature then there will be a speed increase.

A large part of that is the reduce in database calls, if you had already optimized to reduce DB calls via SQL Server then the performance increase is much smaller.
Each database hit takes time. Any one who uses this forum with the database and web servers not local to each other will realize this because a even with a small forum you go from a page that loads in 3 seconds locally to a page loads in 20 seconds remotely.
As I mentioned at some point forum should be optimized for SQL Server. In its current status it's optimized for Access. Using stored procedures alone does not optimized as ASP application for SQL Server, the database and application design need to be taken into consideration for SQL optimization.
If you are running the SQL version, set up your remote forum locally on your machine and run it with the database connection set to your live database server. You'll see the difference that I'm talking about.

Is this the only changed files? Because it's means that you haven't touched the other files, and i think it's not correct, because there is some tiny changes in files, like in Common.asp (change of version). Is there's any other files with this kind of changes?

There's something wrong in my forum:
1. In my v7.6 forum, it seems that the number of Members online is not correct. For example, my forum has 3 members, but the number I see can be 20 or much more. The name of many of them is strange to me. They are not my members.
2. I have a problem in Unicode support. Sometimes, strange character is shown. Some of my members are Vietnamese and they want to type Vietnamese. How can this be solved?
|
Posted By: WebWiz-Bruce
Date Posted: 28 November 2003 at 5:44am
1. some of these maybe guests, or members have selected not to be
shown. Active users counters are not 100% correct becuase HTTP is a
stateless protocol so it is very hard to track users and the data is
over the last 10 minutes.
2. You may need to change the page encoding to support other characater sets.

Excuse me to butt in on this post, but i read few things that I couldnt help but to comment on.
This forum in my opinion is not optimised for either access or sql server, actually there is far more optimisation gone into using sql server then there is in using access database. In its current state you could say it is a hybrid in between access and sql.
And I also believe that the db no matter what it is, gets a bit more blame for the speed issues then it should. There are far more things that could be responsible for slowing down the forum then just db calls.
On another note I do have an issue that I like to mention, and it belongs to the dreaded active_users table/routine. I have a forum (uses sql server) that gets accessed by a network. The network goes through a proxy server that acts as a firewall. Currently the active_users table has the ip address as the primary key. My issue is what if you have several users going through one access point (proxy server uses 1 ip) through to the forum? All reporting of the buddy list and the active users becomes in correct. Since the primary key is the ip address then you can not have 2 entries in the active users table with the same ip address.
Acombination of the sessionid & user Id could be an alternative to the ip address?
|
Posted By: WebWiz-Bruce
Date Posted: 01 December 2003 at 3:39am
There are a number of ways to track users but non are 100% accurate as HTTP is a stateless protocol.
The problem with using session ID's is that if you have cookie disabled
and are browsing the forum as a guest then on every page and for every
image, etc. a new session ID will be created thus filling the active
users table with many hundreds of incorrect entries.

Point taken on the session issue. I know there are a number of ways that this could be done. But the active user table in its current state will not work properly.
At the end of the day, it is good to find out information about guests, but it is really the membership that takes the priority rather then the guests. If I had to choose between tracking guests and forum members, it would be members all the time.

Whatever way you use it will never be 100% accurate, the active users feature is more of a guide and a bit of a gimmic really.

Hello everyone...
Firstly, I would like to thank the author for making this utility (and all the other utilities to that matter) free for anyone to use. Then, I want to say that I appreciate the interface, the design, the work, and the effort that has been put into it thus far. Indeed, it is a monumental effort considering the fact that very little is open source for the Windows world. This is revolutionary in a sense.
I wish this were a version for .net and open source at the same time. I have seen free stuff for .net, but not open source in the true sense of the word. With that, I mean that the source code for the .dll files is hidden.
Now, I went ahead and decided to use this tool on my site. However, I am running into some problems. I keep getting an Internal server error. For the most part, I fix the porblems in the code as I go along to make it run smoothly but it just raised a red flag because It is becoming tiring and I sort of feel uncertain what to expect. So, I wondered if I simply did something wrong during the installation or downloaded the wrong version!
Did anyone have to do any custom error fixing in the code, or did the code run smoothly for all of you?
Sincerely,
Nour

From the error you posted in another post I guessing it is something wrong with ADO on your server.
Make sure that you haven't changed anything to do with ADO.
Also try downloading and installing the latest database drivers as this
will update ADO, you can get them from www.microsoft.com/data

No changes were made to the script mentioned above until after the the errors appeared. I am not sure about the problems with the ADO because I don't own or administer the server itself. I will have to check.

Maybe a very stupied question, but I can't seem to solve it yet
Greetings, Ivar

In the install instructionjs for brinkster it does mention that you
need to disable the WYSIWYG post editor as it is not compatible with
brinksters pop up add system.

Thanks.
Back to problem number 1.
I think all guests have the name Guestx, with x is a number. Is it right? And the others, I saw their nicks, but, I have an error message that I cannot view their profiles. I've checked my database, I don't see their registrations.

R u using a free webhost ? if yes, then this problem will be there as free webhosters share resources to save money which causes these kinda problems.
it happened with me2 but either disable it or move 2 paid webhost.

Yes it will start with a new database. from your old forum, go to the forum/admin/database folder and download the wwforum.mdb file. Replace that file with the file in new forum.

I've been facing another problem.
If I come into my site as a guest, there's nothing to say about. But if I log in with my account, when there is RTE on the screen, error messge boxes appear, that "A runtime error has occured". They always appear when I move my mouse over the RTE. All files are from version 7.6. I've tried re-upload files named beginning with "RTE", the state is not changed.
I also cannot use buttons to define text color, text size,...
What's happening?
A friend of mine says that he doesn't see any error message box, but he could not define text color. He's running WindowsXP, while I'm running Win2K. All critical updates are updated, virus definition is up2date. Is there anything wrong?
I'm hosting on 1ASPHost.com
What can I do now?
PS: I saw another topic named 100mb hosting message on this forum. Maybe I'm facing the same problem with its creator. But the fact that I cannot define text color happened before 1ASPHost started to add advertisements to my site. I've visited some other forums on http://www.domaindlx.com - www.domaindlx.com and the same thing appears.

Like most of the free web hosting you get adds are injected into pages
so the WYSIWYG (RTE) post editor can not be used on your site while you
use free web hosting.
You will have to disable the RTE editor from the admin area.

I've tried disable the RTE as you, show, but when I clicked on the reply box (how should I call it now?), error message boxes still appear.

It looks like the way this free host inject adds into pages messes up the code for the page.
It looks like you will either have to get 1ASPHost to change the way
they inject adds in your pages or move to a paid hosting account.

I'm having the same problem when I roll over the text box on my site... and, I'm not using a free host.
The error is a Runtime error, Object Expected. Line 327.
Here's line 327:
<td align="center"> <a href="JavaScript:openWin('printer_friendly_posts.asp?TID=10' ,'printer_friendly','toolbar=0,location=0,status=0,menubar=1 ,scrollbars=1,resizable=1,width=640,height=390')"><img src="forum_images/print_version.gif" align="absmiddle" border="0" alt="Printable version"></a>
Any ideas??? Thanks!
P.S. Not sure if this is related, but for some reason I don't see any file calling the RTE_message_form_js.asp file...

Most errors like this are coursed by corrupted files, try reuploading the files again.

ADODB.Recordset error '800a0cc1'
Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal.
/forum_topics.asp, line 424
Use SQL Server. Any Ideas? It works fine under the Active topics (if you select Active Topics) However, choosing a thread within, it doesn't work.. we get this error...

You need to have followed the upgrade posts to change some of the
stored procedures in the sql server version bewteen those versions..

Great Upgrade!
It runs like a champ except for just one minor bug I'm noticing...
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a005e'
Invalid use of Null: 'Replace'
/novvaforums/functions/functions_format_post.asp, line 875
That keeps comming up in the "Printable Version" popup at the very end... It only occurs in topics with more than one post.
It basically cuts off the last post in a topic... Any idea what can be done to fix it?
