I've setup the Web Wiz Forum on a 'PAID' Brinkster account and it works just fine despite the warning that it won't. However I only have MS Access 97 on my PC and can't read in the wwForum.mdb database file to be able to change the admin password at the tblAuthor record 1. Do I have to go out and buy MSAccess 2000 just to change my admin password??? There must be another way to setup an admin account. Brinkster supports MSAccess 2000 so that's not a problem. They just don't supply a database editor.

Maybe some ASP programmer out there can submit a snippet code that will read and write to those database records? I would do it but I don't now the Web Wiz mdb file's dataset structure. And I'm not all that ADOB connection oriented either.

Spook

Here is a free WWW based database admin tool.  Its very good adn easy to use.  Allows you to edit database structure, content etc

Im probably missing something here ... but why dont you just login to the Admin account within your WWW Forum site ... and change its password, ie as an account holder would?

the forum is a database editor.. you can edit everything in the database with the forum.. you dont need access or another editor at all, and if you change the passwords manually in the database with access, then you have f**ked up the whole username..

passwords are encrypted and shows up like this in the database: 6734DDD7A6A6C9F4D34945B0C9CF9677F3221EC9

Here's the situation:

1) I just loaded WWF for the first time...

2) You can not log into the Admin account as there is none yet unless the programmer made a default one but he did not share the default password...

3) The programmer's very instructions in his remarked lines in common.asp is to manually edit the admin password even though he goes onto say that passwords are also encrypted. I just assumed that he meant it will encrypt my manual entry after I save it. (see footnote ¹)

I like your suggestion on a database editor kiwi I will try that. I don't think I will f^^^ it up as I'm just following the programmer's instructions. And I am not a novice ASP programmer either. What do you say Mr. Programmer. Help me before I do screw things up like anthrax says...

Spook

¹ - Footnote on common.asp

'Encrypted passwords
'This will make your forum unsecure from hackers if you disable this!!!!!
'This can NOT be changed once your forum is in use!!!
'You will also need to directly edit the database to type in the admin password to the Password field in the tblAuthor table at record position 1
'also edit both common.asp files to change this variable
Const blnEncryptedPasswords = true

if you have read the readme file for webwiz forums you should know that the default admin username is Administrator and the default password is letmein..

it is an asp script that encrypts the passwords, not access, so if you manually change the admin password in the database without setting blnEncryptedPasswords to false then you have crashed the whole damn thing and have to reinstall..

If you read the install insructions that come in the forums documentation folder you will find that a default admin account is created for you and what the username and password is for this account.

The comments that you refer to are for the constent for encrpyted passwords:-

Const blnEncryptedPasswords = true

As it says in the comments above this, if you disable the encrypted passwords your forum will be insecure and insructions on what to do if you do go ahead and disable the encrypted passwords.

This has NOTHING to do with installing the forum and 99.9% of users will never need or want to disable the encrytpted passwords.
