Hi, I'm a tech knownothing who has somehow ended up with the job of making changes to a website. I'm having to learn how to do it as I go along.

One thing I'm struggling with at the moment is - how do I find out the format of some text that is in a GIF file? I need to know the format of some text that is in there so I can replicate it on other parts of the site. But once you've created text in a GIF, it becomes a graphic and you can't find out the format (font, size, colour etc.) afterwards. Can anyone help me out?

Apologies for asking what is probably a very dumb question.

Thanks

Hi there, and welcome.

That is not a dumb question, and unfortunately there is no easy way to find out the font of the text in a graphic. What you would need to do is to just go to a font website and try to find a similar one.

You can try http://www.1001freefonts.com/ - http://www.1001freefonts.com/ , http://www.abstractfonts.com/fonts/ - http://www.abstractfonts.com/fonts/ , http://www.fontfreak.com/index2.htm - http://www.fontfreak.com/index2.htm  (there's a bunch more, just search on Google)

Hope this helps.

Hi lemoncurry - I'm a tech-knowsomething, and KC is right. You can't find our from a GIF file. The best thing you can do is try to find a similar font.

If you know anything about Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, you can open the GIF, convert the image to RGB, then create a new layer and begin experimenting with fonts.

However, if you are dealing with a file from a professional designer, it is likely that you cannot find the same font for free. (Good fonts cost money.) You will probably have to settle for something similar.

Cheers

$300 for a font?!? I have never had a situation where i couldn't find a copyright-free font for free on the internet that would suit my needs.
