I was wondering, why is <br /> sometimes used in ASP? (Instead of <br>)

<br /> is to make HTML complient with XML so it is XHTML really.

In XML all tags must have a closing tag, with <br> you don't as well as things like form buttons so instead you use /> at the end of the tag. eg:-

<input type="submit" name="Submit" value="Post Reply" />
<br />
<hr />
