Subject: Windows 2000 Server Software License

Bit of a question... We have a problem in our office and we need to get Windows 2000 Server installed on a machine ASAP... However we have ordered the software and its going to take a week to be delivered

We was wondering, would it be illegal for us to borrow a copy of Windows 2000 Server off someone else... So we can get up and running today?? Because technically we will have a licence for it soon...

Or for it to be legal does it have to have been installed using the product key on your own license??

Thanks for any help...

For it to be legal it would need to be installed with your own product key license.

As licenses for win2k server cost quite allot I doubt many people would be willing to lend someone their license.

Well the disk and license was no problem as we have one used by our sister company.

What about this, when you run a 'repair' on windows 2000 server does that require you to enter the product key? Would is be possible to install and configure using the software we have now, then next week run a 'repair' so it can use the new product key?

Thanks for your input people by the way.

In Windows 2000 it is simplet to change the product key without repair or re-install, nevertheless it is illegal to install while you do not have a valid license. If it is that urgent you maybe should have requested a express delivery, who takes 1 week these days?

Well actually, this is a very grey area .. After talking to a mate who works at  Microsoft in a lengthy discussion, I was informed that so long as you can PROVE you have a corresponding licence for the server product you are installing, then you will be ok. So I guess you can install with another licence key, just when Bill comes knocking on your door, be prepared to show him the licence.

HTH!!!

Also, since you are a Micro$oft customer with a valid license, you could call them and tell them your situation.  They probably will help.

I was surprised when they actually gave me the CD-KEY over the phone when I explained that I wanted to move my FrontPage off an older computer and put it on a newer computer.  I just had to prove that I had a license (since I registered the software after buying it, that was easy).

They might actually give you the CD-KEY over the phone if you tell them you can't wait for the box version.

Go to their website and call them.  They actually answer the phone.
