When i goto /forum/admin i get the usual username and password box, but the security images are missing and so is the link to this website.

However, on the normal register page.... the security images appear on there

I see this too. Sometimes only some of the images are missing. If I hit refresh, it usually changes. There's an intermittant nature to the way it fails here. When I go to some folks installations, everything works fine, so I assume I must need some information on security and permissions on my server, but so far no one here has been able to come up with a work around.

I'll watch the responses to your question with great interest.
