Search results will display matches even in forums that a user does not have access to.  It will display the topic and when they click on it, the forum then tells them they don't have access.  In some cases, the topic heading itself contains too much information and I don't want certain members to be able to even see that.  Is there a way around this?

Yup, you recode some pages.  This will cause the search to be slower but I'll see what I can knock up over the next couple of days (once I get the threading tree mod sorted out).

We've integrated WWF so we cannot easily or practically upgrade.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who's already fixed this searching problem by sorting out the code.

PS It's not just on searching but on Active Topics as well that this problem is seen. The forum reports all Active Topics within the parameters specified and only applies the security level checking when  a topic is selected.

This has become somewhat of a problem for me as well.

A fix is definately needed!

The active topics page in version 7.6 no-longer shows any of the post heading that the user doesn't have access to.

I still haven't found a solution for the search page to also check permissions before showing the tipic heading and keep performance.

If anyone can help find a solution to this I would be very grateful.

Search is not really in the same category as Active Topics as some of us, my site included, use unavailable topics to "encourage" registration. Think of a newbie considering subscribing - The first thing they do is to search for their favourites: Nothing found so they go somewhere else.

The complete permissions structure is complex but you could provide a basic Admin configurable switch to include / exclude search results depending on Guest or not (GroupId <>2). Performance needn't suffer at this basic level and it would probably satisfy most people's requirements.

Hope this helps

Good post Nigello

We were hoping that the permissions (allowed access) could be contained in the cookie. When the SQL search or active topics string is composed unpermitted noticeboards could be excluded.

This should/could(?) work as I believe the access rights logic applies at the noticeboard level and not to individual topics?

We're going to try and sort it out next week (as we can't use it the way things are); if we get anywhere I'll let you know. In the meantime if anbody else has a solution...

Ive been looking at it and well, running a permission check on each search really hammers the SQL count.  I think the only way to really work towards a solution will be to code the permissions checking as a stored proceduer but that a problem for those with the Access backend.
