Subject: Cookie Issue

I am running Windows 2000 Server with SQL 2000 for the web forum.  I am using Windows XP Sp1 and IE6 sp1 to try to gain access.  Whenever I try to login it gives me an error stating it could not log me in due to a cookie problem.  I have it set to allow all cookies, but it does not work.  It works fine on Windows 2000 IE 5.5 and Windows 2000 IE6 sp1, but will not work with windows XP.  Does it have to be P3P compliant?

I can login to this forum with no problem with windows xp and ie6..

Sounds like the cookie index on IE has become corrupted.

What you need to do to force IE to reset it's cookie index is first delete all cahed internet files then delete all cookies.

Better still use a faster less buggie better browser like Mozilla Firebird from:-

I wasn't at first but after playing with it for a bit to test the forum in I was so impressed with the speed, less bugs, and more functionality it quickly became my default browser and really can't see why anyone would want to use IE anymore.

I agree with this. I have changed over to firebird and will never use IE again..

The only web site I have come across that Mozilla Firebird didn't work in was the Windows Update site as it uses an IE active X thing to check your computer for the latest updates. But thats no problem, I just fire up IE for the Windows Update the rest of the time I'm using Mozilla Firebird.

The RTE post editor for this forum also works in Mozilla and in some ways the Mozilla Midas API implemetation of RTE features is better then IE, you don't get the double line spacing when hitting return and there are some neat scaling features when changing the size of things like images and tables.

Suggesting a different browser does not resolve the problem.  I do agree that Mozilla is a nice browser, but if I am having the problem then I am sure someone else is and I need to find out how to correct it.  If the cookie index is becoming corrupt then this would have an affect on more than one site, but it does not.  As you can see I can login to this site with no issue and I am using my Windows XP SP1 machine with IE 6.x Sp1

No, IE has a known cookie index bug, when the cookie index becomes corrupted it means that cookies work on some sites but not on others as the cookie index is corrupted relating to certain sites.

The only way to reset the cookie index in IE is to do as I explained in my previous post on the subject.

I too am having this problem.  Unfortunately, the only site that seems to give me trouble is my own!  I can't login to it.  I have spent the better part of the past three days trying to fix it with no success.  I am downloading firebird as I type.  Borg, when you say delete cookies and cached internet files, do you mean simply go to "internet options" in IE, and click the delete cookies and delete files buttons?  Because I have done that a dozen times with no success.  Is there more to it?  Do you have other suggestions?

I figured it out.  I now have IE 6.x and Windows XP working with the webwiz forums.  Talking about something stupid.  Somehow the server date was changes by 2 years!.  So when it tried to right the cookie it was writing one that XP and IE 6 was saying was already expired! Reset the date on the server and WHAM it worked.
